Reference tool — not a selection

Read the motor nameplate before it goes in an RFQ.

Motor nameplate

Paste the plate lines as they are.

Order and capitals do not matter; the result updates as you type. Paste an offered replacement’s plate in the second field, and the reader checks frame, poles, frequency, output, voltage, mounting, IP, thermal class and Ex.

Examples:

All 130 engineering tools

A pump, fan or compressor motor is replaced from its nameplate, and the plate carries more codes than it seems: IP code, IM mounting, thermal class, duty type, efficiency class, frame. Paste the plate lines and the tool explains each code to the IEC standards, works out the synchronous speed and builds an RFQ line.

The reader explains codes; it does not select a motor. Shaft, flange and foot dimensions, the terminal box and the bearings are checked against the maker’s drawing. Whatever the plate text does not show, the tool lists separately.

What is on the plate

Protection, mounting, frame.

01

IP: two digits, two questions

The first digit is protection against solids and dust (0 to 6), the second against water (0 to 9), to IEC 60529; IEC 60034-5 applies it to rotating machines. An X in place of a digit means that kind of protection is not rated.

02

IM: how the motor is fixed

The IM code of IEC 60034-7 says whether the motor sits on feet or a flange and how the shaft points: B3 on feet, B5 a flange with through holes, B14 one with threaded holes, B35 and B34 feet with a flange, V the vertical arrangements. The same code is also written in digits: IM 1001 is B3.

03

Frame: shaft height and housing length

The IEC 60072-1 frame number is the shaft height in millimetres; S, M and L are housing lengths. A 132S and a 132M share the shaft height, but their feet are spaced differently. For frames 63 to 315 the reader also gives the standard sizes: foot hole spacing, shaft, B5 flange and B14 face.

Questions about motor nameplates

Is IP55 enough on deck?

IP55 means dust-protected and protected against water jets from any direction (6.3 mm nozzle); IP56 adds protection against powerful water jets. Which one a position needs is set by the equipment maker and the ship’s specification, so the request should repeat what the plate says.

Can a 132S motor replace a 132M?

They share the 132 mm shaft height but not the housing length, so the feet sit at a different spacing. On a fixed base the feet must match, which is why the frame goes into the request with its letter.

What does B35 mean?

IM B35 (IM 2001) is a motor on feet with a drive-end flange with through holes (FF). B3 is feet only, B5 flange only, B14 a flange with threaded holes (FT), and B34 feet with an FT flange.

What does Ex db eb IIC T4 Gb mean?

An explosion-protected motor: db is a flameproof enclosure and eb increased safety, IIC the gas group (hydrogen and acetylene; it also covers IIB and IIA), T4 a maximum surface temperature of 135 °C and Gb the protection level for zone 1. A replacement needs a certificate that covers the same group, temperature class and zone; give the full marking and the certificate number in the request.

The plate says S3 40 %. Does that matter?

Yes. S3 is intermittent periodic duty, and 40 % is the cyclic duration factor. A motor rated for S1 continuous duty and one rated S3 are different machines, so the duty goes into the request as written.

Plate read?

Send its photograph with the reading.

It is a cross-check on your own reading, not a motor selection. Attach a photograph of the plate and give the maker, type, serial number and position, and Vessel Core checks them against each other before an offer goes back.
