Sulzer, Wärtsilä and WinGD: three names over one engine family
The medium-speed programme on this page — the 20, 26, 32, 34DF, 46 and 50DF — is Wärtsilä’s own, designed and supported by Wärtsilä. The two-stroke engines are a different story, and that story decides where a component is quoted from. Sulzer’s large-engine business in Winterthur became New Sulzer Diesel, which merged with Wärtsilä Diesel in 1997 to form Wärtsilä NSD and later Wärtsilä Corporation. For close to two decades the RTA and RT-flex engines were therefore sold, plated and catalogued as Wärtsilä Sulzer.
That changed on 19 January 2015, when the two-stroke business was transferred into a joint venture named Winterthur Gas & Diesel — WinGD — held seventy per cent by China State Shipbuilding Corporation and thirty per cent by Wärtsilä. Wärtsilä transferred its remaining shareholding to CSSC in 2016, and WinGD has been wholly CSSC-owned since. The engines themselves did not change. The company holding the design authority behind them did, and with it the catalogue an OEM-route line is confirmed against.
For a buyer this is not corporate trivia. A two-stroke plate in an engine room today can read Sulzer, Wärtsilä Sulzer or WinGD depending on when the engine was built, and the builder named on that same plate is usually none of the three: RTA and RT-flex engines have been built under licence in Japan, Korea and China — Diesel United, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Dalian Marine Diesel, Yichang and Hudong among them — as well as in Wärtsilä’s own works at Trieste. Three different names can appear on one engine without any of them being wrong. Send the plate as photographed rather than the brand as remembered.

Reading a Wärtsilä plate down to a quotable line
A Wärtsilä type designation carries the cylinder count, the configuration and the bore, in that order: in 6L32 the 6 is the cylinder count, the L says the cylinders stand in line rather than in a V, and the 32 is the bore in centimetres. Suffixes do the rest of the work — DF for dual fuel, F for the uprated 46F. Two engines sharing a type designation can still take different components, because what separates them is the engine’s own build number rather than its type.

- Year of build, and the upgrade or retrofit level where the plate or the engine file carries one
- Duty: main propulsion, generating set or dual-fuel installation, and the fuel actually burned in service
- On a dual-fuel unit, whether the line sits on the gas train, on the pilot fuel side or on the common engine
- Cylinder number the component came off, for any running-gear line
- Part number and the part-book page it came from, treated as a starting point rather than a conclusion
- Bearing shells with the undersize stated, and ring sets quoted per cylinder rather than per ring
- Injector, injection pump and common-rail components separated by name, because the three are different orders
- Cylinder head written as a head, a complete cylinder unit or a valve set, since one word covers three scopes
- Turbocharger make and designation from its own plate, since it is a separate maker with a separate catalogue
- Governor or control-system make and software version where the line touches automation
- Running hours since the last overhaul, and any earlier reconditioning of the item itself
- Photographs of the engine plate and of the component in place
