Decode a safety sign code before it goes in an RFQ.

ISO 7010 · shapes and colours to ISO 3864-1

The code, part by part.

Enter one code or several, as written on the order or on the sign, in English or Russian. Below, an offered sign can be checked against the one wanted by its code.

Every ISO 7010 safety sign has a code: a category letter and three digits, such as E001, F001, M002, P003 or W012. Enter one code or a list from a sign order and the reader gives the category, its shape and colours and the referent of the sign, draws a schematic frame with the code inside, checks an offered sign against the one wanted and writes an RFQ line.

This is a reference for decoding a code and writing an RFQ, not safety advice. Which signs a ship needs, and where, is for its fire control plan, its flag and class rules and the competent person.

How a code is built

Category, shape, shipboard signs.

01

The code: E001

The letter is the category of the sign and the three digits its number within the category. E safe condition (escape routes, first aid, life-saving equipment), F fire equipment, M mandatory action, P prohibition, W warning. An ISO 7010 number always has three digits: W012, not W12.

02

Shape and colour: P M W E F

Prohibition: a red circle with a diagonal bar and a black symbol on white. Mandatory action: a blue circle with a white symbol. Warning: a yellow triangle with a black band and a black symbol. Safe condition: a green square or rectangle with a white symbol. Fire equipment: a red square with a white symbol.

Every referent and every category property is confirmed by at least two independent sources. Left out because the sources differ: E017 and F017 (the sources put the firefighters’ lift under different codes), M020, P004, P023 and W024 (the meaning of the referent differs between sources), E005 and E006 (one source gives them as withdrawn, a second still lists them). Left out because only one source gives them: M053 and P080, and a rectangular fire equipment sign. A code that is not in the table is shown with its category, shape and colours only. The table is not the full ISO 7010 list.

Questions about safety signs in an RFQ

What do the letters E, F, M, P and W in an ISO 7010 code mean?

The letter is the category of the sign: E safe condition (escape routes, first aid, life-saving equipment), F fire equipment, M mandatory action, P prohibition, W warning. The three digits number the sign within its category: E001 is the emergency exit to the left, F001 the fire extinguisher, M002 refer to the instruction manual, W012 the electricity warning.

What shape and colours does each category have?

P: a red circle with a red diagonal bar, a black symbol on white. M: a blue circle with a white symbol. W: a yellow triangle with rounded corners and a black band, a black symbol. E: a green square, also used as a rectangle, with a white symbol. F: a red square with a white symbol. The shape and the colour give the category before the symbol is made out.

Do ships use ISO 7010 signs?

IMO Resolution A.1116(30), Escape route signs and equipment location markings, adopted in December 2017, gives the shipboard signs with their ISO 7010 codes: E001 and E002 for the exits, E003 first aid, F001 and F002 for the extinguisher and the hose reel, the life-saving signs such as E036 lifeboat and E040 lifebuoy, and P, W and M signs. It applies to ships built on or after 1 January 2019 and to ships under repair or alteration within SOLAS chapters II-2 and III from that date. Which signs a ship carries is for its fire control plan, its flag and its class.

What should a request for safety signs include?

The ISO 7010 code of each sign with its meaning, the size in millimetres, the material (photoluminescent, self-adhesive vinyl or a rigid plate), whether a supplementary text or arrow is wanted, the quantity of each, and a photograph of the sign to be replaced.

Code decoded?

Send the line with a photograph of the sign.

Decoding is a check of the code, not a selection of signs for a ship. Attach the photograph, give the size and the material, and Vessel Core checks them before an offer goes back.
