Shore connection flanges

Three flanges at the quay.

At the quay a ship uses three standard flanges: the international shore connection for the fire main, to the FSS Code, and two MARPOL discharge flanges, for oily water and for sewage. Their sizes are the same on every ship and in every port. Pick a flange or enter a measurement, and the tool gives the dimensions, the bolts and the gasket, draws the flange to scale and writes the RFQ line.

The dimensions follow the rule texts as several sources reproduce them; at a survey the current FSS Code and MARPOL texts and the class society decide.

How they differ

Fire main, oily water, sewage.

01

Shore connection

FSS Code, chapter 2: a 178 mm flange with four 19 mm slots on a 132 mm bolt circle, through which shore water reaches the fire main. Ships of 500 gross tonnage and above carry at least one.

02

Oily water

MARPOL Annex I, regulation 13: a 215 mm flange with six 22 mm slots on a 183 mm bolt circle, for pipes up to 125 mm bore, with an oil-proof gasket.

03

Sewage

MARPOL Annex IV, regulation 10: a 210 mm flange with four 18 mm slots on a 170 mm bolt circle, for pipes up to 100 mm bore.

The inside diameter of the discharge flanges is bored to the pipe outside diameter. Ships of 5 m moulded depth or less may have a 38 mm inside diameter on the sewage flange.

Questions about shore connection flanges in an RFQ

What size is the international shore connection?

An outside diameter of 178 mm, a 64 mm bore, four 19 mm holes on a 132 mm bolt circle slotted to the edge, at least 14.5 mm thick, for 1.0 N/mm2; it is kept aboard with a gasket, four 16 x 50 mm bolts, four nuts and eight washers.

How do the two MARPOL discharge flanges differ?

The oily discharge flange is 215 mm with six 22 mm slots on 183 mm and 20 mm thick; the sewage flange is 210 mm with four 18 mm slots on 170 mm and 16 mm thick. Both are bored to the pipe and rated for 600 kPa.

Which ships need an international shore connection?

SOLAS requires ships of 500 gross tonnage and above to carry at least one.

What should the request include?

Which flange, the pipe outside diameter for a discharge flange, the coupling on the other side of a shore connection, the gasket and bolts wanted, and the quantity.

Flange clear?

Send the line with a photograph.

Dimensions are a cross-check, not a survey. Attach photographs of the flange and the pipe, and Vessel Core checks them before an offer goes back.
