MAN Energy Solutions has been named Everllence since 4 June 2025, and the two-stroke programme is branded Everllence B&W today. Nameplates on engines already in service still read MAN B&W, so both names are used on this page — send whichever is stamped on your unit.
Reading a two-stroke designation such as 6S50MC-C: the first figure is the number of cylinders, the letter that follows is the stroke-to-bore class — S super-long stroke, L long stroke, K short stroke — and the number after it is the bore in centimetres. So L50MC and S50MC share a 50 cm bore but differ in stroke, and their wear parts are not interchangeable on that basis alone. The Mark number and build are what settle a part number.
S50MC / S60MC

What a MAN B&W marine engine looks like in service

What a MAN designation says before a part number does
MAN type designations are read rather than looked up. On the two-stroke side a string like 6S50MC-C8 runs left to right: the 6 is the cylinder count; the letter after it is the stroke class, running K, L, S and G from the shortest stroke to the ultra-long-stroke green type; the 50 is the bore in centimetres; MC marks a camshaft-controlled engine and ME an electronically controlled one; a trailing C means the compact frame. Fuel suffixes come last — GI for gas injection, LGIM for methanol, LGIP for LPG — and the Mark number after that pins the revision. An enquiry that says S50MC has given the family. One that says 6S50MC-C8 has given the engine.
The four-stroke side reads differently, and the two are easy to mix up. There the designation carries two numbers instead of one: in L32/40 the 32 is the bore and the 40 the stroke, both in centimetres, and the leading letter is the cylinder arrangement — L in line, V in a vee. The Holeby generating-set programme follows the same rule, which is what L16/24, L21/31, L23/30 and L27/38 are saying. So one number behind a stroke letter means a two-stroke; a pair of numbers separated by a slash means a four-stroke. Reading that the wrong way round sends an enquiry to the wrong catalogue before anyone has looked at a part.
The B&W in the two-stroke name is older than any of it. MAN acquired Burmeister & Wain, the Copenhagen shipyard and engine builder, in 1980, and the joint name has outlived every corporate change since — including the 2018 move from MAN Diesel & Turbo to MAN Energy Solutions and the 2025 rename to Everllence, under which the two-stroke programme is branded Everllence B&W. A plate cast decades ago remains the plate to send; the brand above it has changed more often than the engine below it.

The builder is named on the plate too, and it matters
MAN stopped building two-stroke engines at scale in the 1980s and has licensed the design ever since. The engines in service were built by the licensee network: Hyundai, Doosan and STX in Korea; Mitsui — licensed since 1926 and the oldest of them — Hitachi and Kawasaki in Japan; and a large Chinese group including CSSC-MES Diesel, Dalian, Yichang and Hudong. A plate therefore carries two identities. The MAN B&W type is the design. The builder name and works number beside it are what a licensee parts route is keyed to. One of the two narrows a line to a family; both together narrow it to an engine.
- Full type designation as stamped, with the cylinder count, the C where present and the Mark number
- Builder named on the plate — a Korean, Japanese or Chinese licensee, or MAN itself on an older or four-stroke unit
- The builder’s own engine or works number, which is what a licensee route is keyed to
- Year of build, and any conversion or upgrade recorded against the engine since
- MC or ME stated explicitly, since camshaft and electronic actuation share almost nothing on the fuel and exhaust side
- On a four-stroke, the complete designation with the arrangement letter — L27/38, not 27/38
- Duty: main propulsion or generating set, and for a genset the alternator make where the line touches the coupling
- Cylinder number the component came off, for any running-gear line
- Part number and the part-book page it came from, treated as a starting point rather than a conclusion
- Bearing shells with the undersize stated, and ring sets quoted per cylinder rather than per ring
- Exhaust valve written as a spindle, a seat, a housing or a complete cage — one word, four different orders
- Piston written as a crown, a skirt, a rod or a complete assembly, since on a crosshead engine those are separate items
- Turbocharger make and designation from its own plate, since it is a separate maker with a separate catalogue
- Running hours since the last overhaul, and any earlier reconditioning of the item itself
- Photographs of the engine plate, of the builder plate where it is separate, and of the component in place
