Bearing bushes and thrust bearingRotor supportKBBRadial bearing bushes run in the bearing casing on engine lube oil, with an axial thrust bearing taking the pressure difference across the rotor. Clearance growth here typically shows up as rising vibration and noise, increased oil throughput, and — once rotor position degrades enough to allow rubbing — loss of charge air pressure. Report rotor axial and radial clearance readings with the RFQ.
Cartridge group requestsAssembly levelKBBA cartridge group carries the rotor, bearing casing, bearing bushes and sealing bushes as one balanced assembly. State in the RFQ whether the vessel plans an exchange overhaul or a component-level rebuild, because the two produce completely different item lists.
Casings, nozzle rings and shroud ringsGas pathKBBThe gas inlet casing carries a turbine nozzle ring that sets the flow geometry into the wheel, with a separate shroud ring protecting the casing itself. Thermal cycling on heavy fuel distorts and cracks these parts, and deposits on the nozzle ring reduce effective turbine area, which drives turbocharger speed and charge air pressure up and shifts exhaust temperatures across the engine.
Filter silencer and oil supplyIntake and oilKBBThe filter silencer element is the simplest part on the machine to renew and the one most often left too long; a blocked mat raises exhaust temperatures across every cylinder. Oil inlet fittings, restrictors and screens belong in the same RFQ, because bearing life follows oil condition.
HPR frames — the earlier radial generationKBB HPR seriesKBBHPR designations are the family letters plus a size number, for example HPR3000 through HPR6000, covering roughly 500–3,000 kW per unit — the duty band the later ST generation went on to cover at higher pressure ratio. ST designations may additionally carry a variant suffix. Either way it is the specification number on the plate, not the designation, that defines the build.
Legacy R-seriesKBB R seriesKBBOlder R-series machines are still running on long-lived medium-speed installations, and they use a water-cooled bearing housing, so cooling-side parts belong in the same request. These requests usually need more evidence than current frames — plate photographs, a component photograph and the engine type, because the printed spares documentation on board is often the only remaining reference.
Nozzle ring and diffuser variantsMatching-criticalKBBTurbine nozzle rings and compressor-side diffusers exist in more than one variant per frame, and the specification number is what separates them. A part that bolts up correctly can still shift the matching of the engine, so the matching reference from the technical file belongs in the RFQ next to the designation.
One-piece turbine wheelTurbine sideKBBExhaust gas enters the wheel radially at its periphery through the gas inlet casing and nozzle ring, turns, and discharges axially through the exducer at the wheel eye. The wheel is a single nickel-alloy casting joined to the shaft, so a bent or eroded blade is not an individual blade order — it moves the request to a shaft assembly or a cartridge.
Radial compressor wheelCompressor sideKBBThe aluminium compressor wheel is a life-limited item on many KBB installations, counted in running hours rather than replaced on condition. Bore and back-face fatigue, plus foreign-object damage drawn through a tired filter silencer, are the usual reasons a wheel comes off before its hour limit.
Sealing bushes at both endsSealingKBBSealing bushes separate the oil space from the gas and air sides. When they wear, oil migrates towards the compressor casing or into the exhaust — oily charge air, deposits in the cooler, or a smoking uptake are the symptoms an engineer reports before the parts list is written.
ST frames — the principal radial familyKBB ST seriesKBBST-series machines, including the current ST27 and ST27-EP, are KBB's principal radial family, covering roughly 500–6,000 kW per unit on medium-speed auxiliary sets and main engines. Typical items are cartridges, shaft assemblies, plain bearings, sealing bushes, nozzle rings and filter silencer elements.
297 framesFrame rangeNapier297-frame requests arrive written as NA297 or simply as “297” copied from a stores list. The 297 and 357 frames belong to the NA 7 Series (NA297, NA307, NA357, NA397); Napier’s NT machines are designated differently (NT1-10, NT1-12, NT1-14, NT2-26, NT2-28), so confirm the full designation as stamped before a rotor, cartridge or nozzle ring line is quoted.
357 framesFrame rangeNapierLarger-frame 357 requests are typically overhaul-driven: blade sets, nozzle rings, thrust arrangements and casing hardware quoted together against one docking window.
Blading and nozzle ringGas sideNapierHeavy fuel ash and unburnt residue build on the turbine blades and on the nozzle ring vanes, then erode them. Thermal cycling adds cracking at the vane trailing edges and root fillets. Blades sit in machined roots with locking hardware, so a damaged set is normally treated as a set, not as a single replacement blade.
Complete cartridge requestsAssembly levelNapierA cartridge line covers the balanced rotor with its bearing housing and seals as one package. Exchange or core-return conditions attached to that route are read line by line during review.
Compressor wheel and diffuserAir sideNapierOil mist, salt and dust glaze the compressor wheel and the diffuser passages, blunting the blading and pushing the machine toward surging. Tip rub after a bearing problem leaves witness marks on the shroud line. Wheel and diffuser are matched to the frame build, so both are usually reviewed together.
Filter silencer and casing hardwareIntake and casingsNapierA loaded filter silencer starves the machine of air and drags efficiency down before anything mechanical fails. On the hot side, gas-inlet and gas-outlet casings suffer distortion, gasket-face erosion and stud damage over repeated overhauls, and casing hardware is worth listing in the same RFQ as the rotating parts.
Journal and thrust bearings, sealsRotor supportNapierPlain journal bearings and the thrust arrangement depend on clean, uninterrupted oil. Contamination, a short oil interruption on shutdown or a blocked supply line shows up as bearing wear, rising vibration and then rotor contact. Worn labyrinth seals let oil migrate toward the gas path or exhaust gas into the bearing space.
Medium-speed auxiliary setsEngine dutyNapierAuxiliary and propulsion four-stroke installations. Provide the engine make and type alongside the turbocharger plate — the same frame is built to different specifications for different engine applications.
Multi-engine gensets and propulsion setsEngine dutyNapierWhere several medium-speed engines in one machinery space carry the same frame, state whether the RFQ covers one machine or the full set, and whether the units carry different build or rotation records after earlier renewals.

NT axial machinesNapier NT SeriesNapierA separate, later axial product line (NT1-10, NT1-12, NT1-14), not a continuation of the 7-Series frames. Higher pressure ratios and its own sizing and drawing set — nothing crosses over from an NA machine. Copy the NT designation exactly as stamped, including the size suffix, for example NT1-12.
