Marine turbocharger spare parts — a sourcing guide for ABB, MAN, Napier, Kawasaki and Mitsubishi

Turbocharger spare-part RFQs require careful unit identification because similar family designations can cover different build revisions. The reason is specific to this equipment: a turbocharger fitted twenty years ago has often not stayed as it was built. Units are upgraded in service — a different nozzle ring, a different compressor wheel, a bearing arrangement changed at a maker retrofit — and the type designation on the plate does not move when that happens. The serial number does the work the designation cannot. This guide covers five frequently encountered OEM families, the evidence needed to identify the unit, and the difference between an OEM route and a documented alternative. It does not quote lead times or prices — those depend on the specific unit, vessel schedule and supply route confirmed during quotation.

Which OEM families are common on commercial vessels

Several OEM families recur across turbochargers fitted to main and auxiliary engines. Correctly identifying the family and exact unit is the first step for any RFQ. Two of these families also carry a name that changed while the machines stayed in service, so a plate and a current catalogue can disagree without either being wrong.

  • Accelleron / legacy ABB Turbo Systems nameplates — TPL, TPS, VTR, A100, A200, MXP and Power2 families used across two-stroke and four-stroke medium- and low-speed engines, alongside the current ACCX and TPX ranges.
  • Everllence / legacy MAN Energy Solutions and MAN Turbo nameplates — TCR, TCA and NR/NA families used on MAN B&W and MAK engine applications.
  • Napier Turbochargers — the NA and NT ranges, within which 355 and 357 are frame sizes rather than separate families. Historically on medium-speed engines.
  • KBB and Kawasaki — two separate makers often written as one. KBB is Kompressorenbau Bannewitz, whose ranges are ST, HPR, R and M; Kawasaki builds licensed TCR and TCA units. Read the plate rather than the assumption.
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) — MET series on Mitsubishi two-strokes and licensed builds.

Other names sometimes seen: IHI, Elliott, PBS, Cummins Turbo Technologies (Holset), BorgWarner (for smaller units). On a licensee-built engine the turbocharger is frequently a maker the engine builder chose rather than the one the design house lists, so the unit is identified from its own plate rather than from the engine specification.

What we need to identify the correct unit

Turbochargers are one of the equipment categories where the wrong part number can look plausible at first glance. It happens because the families are internally consistent: a designation that reads correctly, in the right format, for the right family can still belong to a neighbouring frame size or an earlier revision, and nothing about it looks wrong on paper. To avoid that, send the following evidence with the RFQ:

  1. OEM family and type designation — from the turbocharger nameplate. Include maker, model (e.g. TPL77-C, A160-L37, NA34S), and any suffix / configuration code.
  2. Serial number — critical when the same model has multiple revisions.
  3. Engine builder and engine model — the same turbocharger family may be tuned differently for different engine builds. The matching is done in the turbine, and it is physical: the nozzle ring throat area is what sets how much of the exhaust energy the turbine takes, so the same frame on two engines can carry two different rings. A ring of the wrong area does not fail visibly. It moves scavenge air pressure and exhaust temperature across every cylinder, and the symptom is read on the engine rather than on the turbocharger.
  4. Application — main engine, auxiliary engine, or specific tag (M/E TC, A/E TC 1 of 2, etc.).
  5. Part or drawing reference — if you already have it. For consumables (bearings, seals, O-rings) an old order or a part-book page is often enough. It is worth saying whether the request is for loose components, for a bearing set as a service kit, or for a complete cartridge, because several of these makers supply an exchange rotor or cartridge as a standard route and that is a different line entirely from a set of parts.
  6. Nameplate photo — always useful, especially where the OEM plate coexists with the engine builder's own plate. Photograph both. Where the turbocharger plate has been lost, the engine plate plus the position tag is often enough to narrow the frame, and the remaining detail is confirmed against drawings afterwards.

OEM route vs verified alternative

For turbocharger consumables such as bearings, seals, O-rings and filters, a documented alternative may be considered when the buyer's warranty, class and technical requirements allow it. For rotating assemblies such as the rotor shaft, turbine wheel and compressor wheel, balancing and material records are essential, and the reason is that balancing happens twice: components are balanced individually and the rotor is then balanced as an assembly. Fitting one new wheel to an otherwise sound shaft does not restore a balanced rotor; the assembly is balanced again after the change, and the record of that is part of what is being bought. Stationary nozzle rings and casings still require exact geometry, material and unit-revision confirmation.

Turbocharger-specific evidence that helps

  • The complete OEM designation on the nameplate — sometimes the second or third suffix code changes the part. Suffixes are also where transcription errors land, because they are short, they are often stamped rather than etched, and a single character carries a whole revision.
  • Whether the vessel is in warranty, in a class-driven maintenance window, or in a plain replacement situation. The route differs, and so does what counts as acceptable evidence: a survey item is answered with documentation the surveyor will read, while a routine bearing change is answered with fitment and availability.
  • Whether the buyer already has an OEM quote and is looking for a comparison, or is starting fresh. A comparison is a narrower job than an open enquiry, because the scope is already fixed by the other quotation and the question is what the same scope looks like on another route.
  • Port and ETA — the feasible delivery route depends on the vessel's location and schedule, and on whether the unit will be opened alongside or the parts are being stored against a later docking. A part that is going into a planned overhaul and a part that is holding a vessel are the same part with different handling.

What we cannot promise before the RFQ is reviewed

Vessel Core does not quote turbocharger part prices, lead times or supply route before the specific unit, application and identification evidence are confirmed. Every quotation is prepared for the specific request. A quotation without the serial number, engine model or readable nameplate evidence should be treated as preliminary because the unit revision has not yet been confirmed. That is not a formality on this equipment. The revision is what decides whether a nozzle ring, a bearing set or a rotor belongs to the machine in front of you, and it is the one thing a plausible-looking designation cannot establish on its own.

How to send the RFQ

Use the RFQ form. Attach a clear nameplate photo showing the maker, complete type designation and serial number. If the plate is difficult to read, add a wider photo of the unit and the engine plate. Use the RFQ evidence checklist to review the fields item by item.
