Which Wärtsilä 46 is on the plate

The 46 is three machines under one number: the original, the F generation that followed it, and the newer TS platform. They share a bore and they do not share a parts list, which is why the letter after the number decides the route.

Reading the designation: the leading number is the cylinder count, L or V is the configuration, 46 is the bore in centimetres, and what follows is the generation — nothing for the original, F for the later one, TS for the current platform, with DF and SG marking the dual-fuel and spark-ignited gas members of it. 12V46 and 12V46F are both twelve-cylinder 460 mm engines and they are not the same machine.

The original large-bore four-stroke

The engine the family is named for, in in-line and V builds, on cruise ships, RoPax tonnage and large propulsion installations. Plenty of them are still in service, and their parts route is its own: a component from the F generation does not cross to it on the strength of the shared bore.

The F generation

The successor on the same bore and stroke, offered to IMO Tier II. It is the plate most often met on newer large-propulsion installations, and the one most often confused with the original in a request, because the difference is a single letter at the end of the designation.

The current platform, and its fuel variants

The newer large-bore platform, with the 46TS-DF dual-fuel engine and the 46TS-SG spark-ignited lean-burn gas engine among its members. Gas and dual-fuel machines carry admission and control components with no diesel counterpart, so the fuel variant belongs in the request alongside the type.

In-line and V builds

Both in-line and V engines are built across the family. On a V machine the A-bank and B-bank components are not always symmetrical, so the bank belongs in the line alongside the cylinder number — a detail that is easy to leave out and expensive to leave out.

The generation suffix is the single most common omission in a request for this family, and the most expensive: two engines can share a bore, a cylinder count and a configuration and still take different components.
