Engine-room spare parts supply route selection is not only a price comparison. The route should match the equipment criticality, owner requirements, class expectations, lead time, document needs and vessel schedule.

Vessel Core reviews RFQs through OEM and verified alternative routes depending on the buyer's context. The result should be a practical commercial path, not a blanket promise that one route is always best.

When OEM usually matters most

OEM routes are typically strongest where approval and risk control outweigh price pressure.

What is actually compared on a line

Comparing routes only means anything once the part is unambiguously identified. These are the fields Vessel Core sets an OEM route against a verified alternative on, at RFQ stage.

  • Part number, designation and previous order reference
  • Part-book page and drawing position
  • Equipment nameplate data and serial number
  • Material, build and connection dimensions
  • Class requirements, and whether a class certificate is needed
  • Mating cylinder-unit parts: liner, piston, anti-polishing ring
  • Piston rings: the set per cylinder, the profile and the running-face coating
  • Running gear: piston rod, stuffing box, crosshead shoe
  • Main, crankpin and crosshead bearing shells: undersize, lining material, the set per throw
  • Fuel injection: plunger-and-barrel assembly, delivery valve, injector nozzle
  • Completeness of the assembly: O-rings, gaskets, fasteners
  • Turbocharger: complete rotor cartridge, nozzle ring, diffuser, rotor bearings, labyrinth seals
  • Pump: impeller, mechanical seal, shaft sleeve
  • Separator: disc stack, gravity disc with its inside diameter, bowl seals and gasket kit
  • Marking and packing requirements
  • Port of call and ETA as stated by the buyer

Several of these settle the comparison on their own. A gravity disc is a diameter, not a description. A bearing shell without its undersize is not a specified part. A ring set quoted per ring rather than per cylinder is a different order from the one the vessel needs.

RFQ wording

Ask for route review, not just a price.

A strong RFQ can request OEM only, alternative only, or both routes for comparison. If both are allowed, include any approval limits: documentation, certificate needs, maker preference, delivery deadline and whether substitutions are acceptable.

For technical clarity, include vessel / IMO, maker, model, serial number, part reference, quantity, photos, drawings and port / ETA.

Recommended wording: "Please review OEM and verified alternative supply routes if technically suitable. Confirm lead time, documents available and any differences before offer submission."

Parts grades

Five grades, not two sides.

OEM against alternative is a choice between two labels. What a buyer actually chooses is a grade: how the part was made, what paperwork travels with it, and what that means when a surveyor asks. Vessel Core quotes against all five and states on every line which one it is.

  1. OEM, maker channel

    The maker’s own part

    The manufacturer’s own component, supplied through the manufacturer’s own channel.

    Documentation
    Maker’s certificate, maker’s part number.
    Where it fits
    Where an approval condition names the maker’s part, or the component sits inside a survey scope.
  2. OEM-equivalent

    Same specification, no maker branding

    Built to the manufacturer’s specification — often by the same sub-supplier that produces the item for the maker — and supplied unbranded.

    Documentation
    Material and dimensional certification against the drawing.
    Where it fits
    Where the specification is known and the brand mark is not itself the requirement.
  3. Remanufactured

    Core restored to specified tolerance

    A used core stripped down, worn elements renewed, and the assembly restored to defined tolerances and re-tested against the original specification.

    Documentation
    Measurements before and after, test report, written scope of what was renewed.
    Where it fits
    High-value assemblies where a core is available to exchange.
  4. Reconditioned

    Repaired to serviceable condition

    A used component cleaned, inspected and repaired to serviceable condition — not returned to as-new tolerance on every dimension.

    Documentation
    Inspection report stating what was measured and what was repaired.
    Where it fits
    Spares carried aboard as backup rather than fitted at a planned overhaul.
  5. Aftermarket

    Producer’s own specification

    Designed to fit and function, with the specification set by the producer rather than by the equipment maker.

    Documentation
    Producer’s own certification.
    Where it fits
    Non-critical items, and cases where the alternative is a vessel standing still.

These are descriptions of grades, not stock on hand, and not a claim of affiliation with any manufacturer. Which grade suits a given line depends on the equipment, the approval condition and the vessel’s schedule — say what matters and the quote will name the grade for each item.

Short answers for marine purchasing teams comparing supply routes.

Are alternatives always cheaper?

No. Alternative routes should be reviewed by technical fit, availability, documents and buyer approval, not only by price.

Can Vessel Core claim official dealer status?

No. Vessel Core is an independent spare parts supplier and holds no dealership, distribution or partnership agreement with any manufacturer. Maker names are used to identify equipment in a request, nothing more. An OEM route means the part is sourced through the manufacturer's own channel — it does not mean Vessel Core is appointed by that manufacturer.

Can I ask for both options?

Yes. If your purchasing policy allows it, ask for OEM and verified alternative routes to be reviewed together with lead time and documentation notes.

What happens when the two routes are not equivalent on a line?

The difference is stated rather than smoothed over. If an alternative matches the specification but not the certification, or matches the dimensions but not the coating, that is written on the line so the buyer decides with the difference in front of them. Where a line has no acceptable alternative, it is quoted OEM only and said so.
