Taiyo Electric Generator
Spare Parts Supplier
Taiyo Electric Co., Ltd. builds brushless marine generators, shaft generating systems and ship switchboards, and Yanmar's guide to its marine auxiliary sets names Taiyo as the maker of the brushless AC generator. Whether the request is for the voltage regulator, the rotating rectifier or the bearings, it starts from the alternator's own nameplate and the type printed on the AVR.
Taiyo Electric machines met on board
Taiyo equipment in the engine room falls into three groups: the generators on the diesel sets, the shaft generating systems driven from the propulsion line, and the switchboards that bring the supply together. The cards follow that order. The regulator types are set apart on their own card, because an AVR is ordered from its own label rather than from the generator.
FE · FE-K
FE and FE-K are the families covered by Taiyo's instruction manual for its brushless AC generators, and the alternators in ship-spares listings carry type codes that begin with FE. The full code goes on after those letters with figures and further letters. Copy all of it with the serial number, because the parts list is drawn up for the machine, not for the family.
Exciter and rotating rectifier
Taiyo describes its marine generators as brushless: the exciter output is rectified on the rotor and fed to the main field, so there are no slip-ring brushes on the excitation path. The diodes and the other parts of that circuit are each ordered by the type printed on the part itself, not by the generator family.
EXU-61A · AS-71-2 · ASC-62-4
Three regulator types that appear in ship-spares listings under the Taiyo name. Each is a designation of its own, so one is not ordered in place of another. The one to quote is the type printed on the AVR already fitted, read together with the alternator type and serial number.
Thyristor shaft generating system
Taiyo lists thyristor-type shaft generating systems among its marine products. The generator on the shaft line runs at whatever speed the propeller turns, and thyristor converters give the ship's network a constant frequency. A request for such a system has two halves, the rotating machine and the converter cabinet, each with its own plate.
Overhang permanent magnet shaft generating system
Developed jointly by Taiyo Electric and Mitsui E&S and announced in February 2026. It sits on the fore end of the main engine, where Taiyo's conventional shaft generators sit on the intermediate shaft, and its generator has a permanent magnet rotor in place of a wound one, so the exciter and rotating rectifier items on the other cards do not apply to it.
Main switchboard · emergency switchboard · starter panels
Taiyo builds main switchboards, emergency switchboards and starter panels for ships. Panel parts are read from the switchboard drawing, and each breaker, relay and meter inside is quoted from its own label, whichever maker's name it carries.
Taiyo Electric Co., Ltd.
Several unrelated companies use the Taiyo name, among them an electronic component maker and brands of small land generators. This page covers the marine generators, shaft generating systems and switchboards of Taiyo Electric Co., Ltd. only.
Why a Taiyo generator comes up in a request
Generator requests rarely begin with a planned list. They begin with a fault on the switchboard meters or a finding at an overhaul, and what was found narrows the order more than the age of the set does. Where the finding is a bearing that is regreased at intervals, the bearing grease quantity calculator gives the grease to add from its outside diameter and width, and with the bore and the shaft speed the factor n x dm.
Voltage that hunts or will not build
A generator that loses voltage, swings or will not build up after a start points first at the excitation chain: the regulator, its sensing and supply wiring, and the rotating rectifier. The ship's electrician or a service engineer settles which part has failed before the order, because a new AVR does not cure a shorted diode.
One diode gone, the rest stressed
When one rotating diode fails, the others on the same assembly have carried the same fault, and many crews renew the set rather than the single part. A photograph of the rectifier assembly belongs with the request, since the mounting and polarity matter as much as the electrical type.
Noise, heat and vibration
Bearing work starts from the marking on the bearing or the item in the generator's parts list, and from whether the machine is a single-bearing alternator carried by the engine coupling or a two-bearing one. Vibration readings from before and after the change help show whether the alignment needs a look too.
Damp windings after a stop
A generator that has stood idle, or taken water from a leak above it, is tested for insulation resistance before it is run again. Where space heaters are fitted, a dead heater is often the reason. The insulation resistance calculator works out PI and DAR from the tester readings.
Taiyo Electric parts we can quote
The list runs from the excitation chain outwards to the frame, then to the switchboard. Every line is tied to a label: the alternator plate, the regulator, the part itself or the panel drawing.
- Automatic voltage regulators, by the type on the fitted unit
- Rotating rectifier diodes and complete diode sets
- Surge suppressors on the rotating rectifier, where fitted
- Rectifier, reactor and resistor items of the excitation circuit, by the type on the part
- Exciter parts, read from the generator's parts list
- Bearings, by the bearing marking or the parts list item
- Space heaters and terminal board items, where fitted
- Brushes and brush holders, only on machines that have them
- Cooling air filters, where fitted
- Switchboard breakers, relays and meters, each by its own label
What to send for a Taiyo generator
Two alternators of the same family can carry different regulators and different rectifier parts. The items below close that gap before the first line is priced.
- A photograph of the alternator nameplate with the type and the serial number
- The type on the AVR label, and a photograph of the regulator in place
- The engine maker and type of the generating set, from the engine plate
- For diodes: the type printed on the diode and a photograph of the rotating rectifier
- For bearings: the marking on the bearing, or the item number from the parts list
- Poles, speed and frequency as stamped; the motor speed calculator shows how the three relate on a generator
- For switchboard items: the panel drawing and the device label; relay functions marked with ANSI numbers can be read with the protection device number reader
- For a switchboard transformer: the vector group from its plate, read with the vector group reader
- Insulation test readings, if the order follows a winding fault
Supply route review for Taiyo Electric generators
A generator order goes wrong in small ways: the right regulator family with the wrong type, or the right diode with the wrong polarity. The review settles those points before any route is priced.
Alternator plate before engine plate
Yanmar's marine auxiliary guide names Taiyo Electric for the brushless AC generator on those sets, and a set of this kind carries two plates. The engine plate identifies the set; the alternator plate decides which generator parts fit, so the request is read from that plate first.
The regulator is matched, not swapped
An AVR is quoted against the type on the unit already fitted. If the label is missing or unreadable, the question comes back with a request for the alternator serial number, rather than a suggested regulator from another range.
OEM-route first, verified alternative for generic items
Regulators and excitation parts go to OEM-route review by default. Generic items such as bearings or air filters can be offered as a verified alternative where the buyer's approval list allows, checked against the marking and confirmed before the quote.
Shaft generators in two parts
The machine on the shaft line and the converter or control cabinet are separate lines with separate plates. A request names both, or says which one it is for, so that a converter part is not looked up against the generator's type.
Switchboard devices by their own labels
A Taiyo switchboard is an assembly, and the breakers inside may come from another maker. Where the breaker is a Terasaki, the Terasaki page shows how its type is read.
Taiyo Electric generators — questions buyers ask
Is Taiyo Electric the same company as Taiyo Yuden?
No. Taiyo Yuden is an electronic component maker. This page covers Taiyo Electric Co., Ltd., which builds marine generators, shaft generating systems and switchboards. Several other unrelated companies also use the Taiyo name, so the full company name on the plate matters.
An AVR is sold online 'for Taiyo generators'. Will it fit our ship's alternator?
Not on the brand name alone. Many such regulators are made for small land and portable generator sets sold under the same or a similar name. A regulator for a ship's Taiyo alternator is matched to the type on the fitted AVR, together with the alternator type and serial number.
Which plate do we photograph on a Yanmar generating set?
Both, but for generator parts the alternator plate decides. Yanmar's marine auxiliary guide names Taiyo Electric for the brushless AC generator on the sets it lists, and that generator carries its own plate with its own type and serial number. The engine plate is still useful to identify the set as a whole.
Our generator has no brushes. Where are the excitation parts?
On the rotor. In a brushless generator the exciter output is rectified by diodes that turn with the shaft, so the rotating rectifier is reached by opening the machine, not at a slip ring. Send the type printed on a diode and a photograph of the assembly before the set is ordered.
Do you quote parts for a Taiyo shaft generator?
Yes, for the rotating machine and for the converter or control cabinet, each from its own plate. Say whether the system is a thyristor type on the shaft line or the newer overhang permanent magnet type on the engine's fore end, as the parts lists have little in common.
Is Vessel Core connected to Taiyo Electric?
No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Taiyo Electric, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.
Start from the Taiyo plate and the AVR label
A request that carries the alternator type, the serial number and the type on the regulator can be read against the right machine from the outset. If only part of that is to hand, send what you have.
