SONDEX equipment behind engine-room enquiries
SONDEX built plate heat exchangers and freshwater distillers in Denmark and has been part of Danfoss since 2016. On a ship its gasketed coolers sit on central cooling and lubricating oil duty, with titanium plates in use on seawater duty, and its distillers make fresh water from engine jacket heat. A plate cooler of one type can hold any number of plates, so the frame plate and the plate count come first in every enquiry.
S7A · S9A · S14A · S20A
Gasketed plate coolers in which the letter after the figure marks a build of the type; the type code from the frame is copied in full. Plates, gasket sets and tightening bolts are quoted against the type, the plate count and the drawing number.
SPS
Welded plate and shell heat exchangers, where the plate pack sits inside a shell. Shell gaskets and connection parts are quoted against the serial; a damaged plate pack is answered with the options the serial allows.
SFD 6 · SFD 13 · SFD 22 · SFD 35
Single-stage distillers that use engine jacket water, or steam, to make fresh water from seawater, with plate evaporator and condenser. Plate packs, gaskets, the ejector, the salinity controller and the chemical dosing unit are quoted against the distiller type and serial.
SONDEX components that reach an RFQ
The list follows a plate cooler from the frame inwards, then the distiller. Each line can carry the order code from the drawing or from an earlier order next to the description.
- Heat transfer plates in stainless steel or titanium
- Gasket sets by gasket fixing and compound
- End plates and gaskets for first and last plates
- Tightening bolts, nuts and washers
- Frame plate and pressure plate linings and port liners
- Shell gaskets and connections for SPS units
- Distiller plate packs, evaporator and condenser gaskets
- Distiller ejectors, salinity controllers and dosing units
What to read off SONDEX equipment before ordering
Each cooler and distiller carries a frame plate with type, serial and often a drawing number. A photograph of the frame plate, together with a count of the plates, settles most of the points below.
- Type exactly as on the frame plate, for example S14A
- Serial number and drawing number from the same plate
- Number of plates in the pack, counted on the unit
- How the gaskets are fixed to the plates, or a photograph of a removed plate
- Plate material and gasket compound if known
- Duty: central cooler, lube oil cooler, or distiller
Supply route review for SONDEX equipment
A plate cooler is built for its duty, so two coolers of the same type can hold different plates and gaskets. The frame plate and the plate count are settled first, then each line is quoted.
Plate count before plates
The type names the frame, not the pack. An order for plates or gaskets states how many are in the pack, or sends the serial and drawing number, so the right set is quoted.
Gasket fixing decides the gasket
Gaskets are made for a fixing method, and the type code shows which build is fitted. A set for one fixing is not offered for a cooler built for another.
SONDEX and Danfoss names
A cooler with a SONDEX plate and one with a Danfoss name can be the same type. The frame plate data is what the parts are checked against, whatever the name.
Original or accepted gaskets
Plates are quoted on the original reference. Gasket sets can also go on an equivalent-source path when the buyer accepts them, matched to the plate type and fixing.
SONDEX heat exchanger parts — questions from the engine room
Our cooler says SONDEX but the manual says Danfoss. Is it the same maker?
Yes. Danfoss took over SONDEX in 2016 and kept the name as its heat exchanger brand. The frame plate data decides the parts, whichever name is on the cover.
Can plates be ordered from the type alone?
Not reliably. The type names the frame, and the number of plates and their arrangement depend on the duty. Count the plates, or send the serial and drawing number, with the request.
Which data is needed for an SFD distiller enquiry?
The distiller type and serial from its plate, the items needed and, for plates and gaskets, whether they belong to the evaporator or the condenser. A photograph of the plate is usually enough to start.
Does Vessel Core open or regasket coolers?
No. Vessel Core identifies and supplies parts only. Opening, cleaning and regasketing stay with the crew or the workshop the owner chooses.
Is Vessel Core connected to Sondex?
No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Sondex, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.
Send the frame plate and the plate count.
Photograph the frame plate, count the plates, say how the gaskets are fixed and what the unit cools or distils, then list the items and the port.
