Gasketed plate coolers for jacket-water, lube-oil and central-cooling duty — M, MX/MK, A/AK/AM/AX and P frame plates, gaskets and frame hardware, quoted from the full type code stamped on the frame
Alfa Laval gasketed plate heat exchanger frames seen in engine-room enquiries
Alfa Laval's gasketed plate coolers cover jacket-water, lube-oil and central-cooling duty across several parallel frame programmes rather than one continuous range, and the programmes are not interchangeable with each other on plates or gaskets. The type code stamped on the frame — the size and the suffix that follows it — is what actually decides which plate and gasket fit; the pipe connection and the duty alone do not.
M3 · M6 · M10 · M15 · M20 · M30
The M frames are the gasketed plate coolers met across jacket-water, lube-oil and central-cooling duty. Plates, gaskets, tightening bolts and the frame and pressure plate lining are the items; the suffix after the size, as in M10-BFM, separates plate and gasket executions and belongs in the request.
MX25 · MK15
The MX and MK frames sit in the same programme with their own plate and gasket forms, written as MX25-B, MX25-BFG and similar. A plate ordered by frame size alone reaches more than one pressing, so send the full suffix and the plate material.
A10 · A15 · A20 · AK20 · AM20 · AX30
The A group covers the plate coolers written with a second letter, and AK, AM and AX are separate families rather than options of one. Executions such as AM20-B, AM20-N, AM20-S and AX30-BW carry the plate and gasket arrangement in the suffix, so copy the whole type code off the frame.
P series frames
The P frames are the older gasketed line, written as a letter and a figure and still found on working coolers. Plates and gasket sets are the scope; where the type plate is unreadable, the plate pressing pattern and the port arrangement identify the unit from photographs.
Plate count is not in the type code
A gasketed cooler leaves the works with the plate stack chosen for its duty, so two units of the same type can hold different numbers of plates. Count the plates, or send the unit serial and the drawing number with the gasket request, and note whether the pack is glued or clip-on because that changes the item, not the price.
Where an Alfa Laval gasketed plate cooler actually gives up
Most enquiries on this equipment trace back to a handful of things, and knowing which one narrows the parts list before a photograph is even needed. Gaskets harden and lose compression over years of heat cycling, and once a gasket starts to weep internally rather than externally, fluid from one circuit finds its way into the other — jacket water into lube oil, or the reverse — often before any external leak shows at the frame; a rising level in one circuit's header tank with no visible external leak is the classic symptom, and it points at the plate pack rather than at the pipework around it. Scale on the fresh-water side and fouling on the oil or seawater side both cut the effective heat-transfer area without necessarily causing a leak, showing up as a slowly rising outlet temperature well before a gasket problem appears — a cleaning and inspection question before it is a spare-parts one. Finally, a plate pack reopened for regasketing more than once can lose uniform tightening pressure across the frame if the bolts or the frame and pressure plate lining are worn, and uneven tightening after a service shows up as a new leak point somewhere the gasket itself was never the problem.
- Heat-transfer plates by frame (M, MX/MK, A/AK/AM/AX, P) and full suffix
- Gasket sets — glued or clip-on fixing, matched to the suffix
- Complete plate packs, matched to the frame's own plate count
- Frame tightening bolts & nuts
- Frame & pressure plate lining
- Carrying bar & guide bar hardware
- Fixed frame & pressure plate (end plates)
- Connector studs & port gaskets
- Corner rings & port ring seals
- Frame paint & corrosion-protection touch-up sets
A regasketing job and a full plate-pack replacement call for different scopes — the items above cover both, grouped by what belongs to the plate pack itself and what belongs to the frame around it.

Frame-plate data that makes an Alfa Laval enquiry quotable
The nameplate is usually fixed to the frame plate, which on a plate heat exchanger is the fixed end plate itself, and it carries the information that decides fit. With the items below an enquiry can be priced in one pass; without them it usually comes back with a clarifying question first. How a plate photograph becomes a priced list is set out on the how we work page.
- Full type code exactly as stamped, including the suffix, e.g. M10-BFM or AX30-BW
- Frame family — M, MX/MK, A/AK/AM/AX or P
- Plate count for that specific frame
- Duty circuit — jacket-water, lube-oil or central-cooling
- Gasket fixing method — glued or clip-on
- Plate material, and the gasket material if it is recorded on the drawing or in the maintenance records
- Port connection size and orientation
- Whether the scope is a full plate pack, gasket set only, or frame hardware
- Unit serial number and drawing number, where available
- Photograph of the nameplate and of one removed plate with its gasket

Supply route review for Alfa Laval gasketed plate coolers.
A plate and its gasket only fit together if the pressing and the suffix both match the frame. The frame family, the full type code and the plate count get settled before anything else.
Suffix-level identification
The suffix after the frame size — as in M10-BFM, MX25-BFG, AM20-N or AX30-BW — carries the plate and gasket execution, so enquiries are worked at that level rather than at frame-size level alone. A frame size named without its suffix reaches more than one pressing.
AK, AM and AX read as separate families
These are not options of the base A frame but separate families in the same programme, each with its own plate and gasket executions. The full type code as stamped is what identifies the plate and gasket, not the leading letter on its own.
Plate count read from the unit, not the type code
The type code does not say how many plates are in the pack, so the unit's own plate count, serial number and drawing number are what actually size a gasket-set or plate-pack request, alongside whether the pack is glued or clip-on.
Regasketing and frame hardware read as one scope
Gaskets, tightening bolts and frame and pressure plate lining are read together rather than item by item, so a worn part that would otherwise leave the pack unevenly clamped gets named in the reply rather than being discovered on the next service.
A fouled cooler is not always a leaking one
A cooler running hot on outlet temperature with no visible leak is a cleaning and inspection question, not automatically a parts one. The enquiry is read that way, so a cleaning-only scope is not turned into a regasketing quote unless the plate condition actually calls for it.
Estonian company, registered in Tallinn
Vessel Core OÜ trades from Tallinn as an Estonian company, Reg. 17028043, VAT EE102773714. A full plate pack is crated freight, while a gasket set or a single plate is a parcel, so the scope of the request also decides how it travels. Supply route, handover option and documentation are confirmed in the quotation.
Alfa Laval M-series heat exchanger parts — questions from the engine room
Which Alfa Laval plate heat exchanger frames come up most often in engine-room RFQs?
The M frames (M3 through M30) are the gasketed plate coolers most often met across jacket-water, lube-oil and central-cooling duty, alongside the related MX25 and MK15 frames and the A group (A10, A15, A20) with its AK20, AM20 and AX30 variants. Older P-series frames, written as a letter and a figure, are still found on working coolers. Send the full type code from the frame plate before a parts list is worked up.
Why does the suffix after an Alfa Laval frame size matter?
The suffix is part of the type designation, not a cosmetic variant. In M10-BFM, MX25-B, MX25-BFG, AM20-B, AM20-N, AM20-S and AX30-BW the letters after the size separate builds that share a frame size, so a request naming the frame size alone leaves more than one build open and has to be reopened. Copy every letter as stamped; the parts book, not the request, says what each one stands for.
Are AK, AM and AX the same family as the A frame?
No. AK, AM and AX are separate families in the same programme rather than options of the base A frame, and each carries its own plate and gasket executions written into the suffix. The full type code as stamped on the frame is what identifies the plate and gasket, not the leading letter alone.
Why does an Alfa Laval RFQ need the plate count as well as the type code?
The type code does not state how many plates are in the pack. A gasketed cooler leaves the works with the plate stack sized for its own duty, so two units of the same type can carry different plate counts. Counting the plates, or sending the unit serial and drawing number, together with whether the pack is glued or clip-on, is what sizes a gasket or plate-pack request correctly.
Is Vessel Core connected to Alfa Laval?
No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no dealership, distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Alfa Laval, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.
Send the frame plate — the parts list follows from it.
Send the full type code including the suffix (for example M10-BFM or AX30-BW), the plate count or unit serial, the duty circuit and the port or ETA. Each line is then read back against the frame it belongs to before a plate, gasket or hardware reference is fixed against it.
