What a Saacke designation tells you
SAACKE GmbH is a family-owned combustion company founded in 1931, with its headquarters and research in Bremen and manufacturing in Germany, Croatia, China and Argentina. On ships its name turns up on three kinds of plate: burners, boilers and gas combustion units. For a burner, the letters show how it atomises the fuel, and that decides which parts list applies. On heavy fuel, the fuel viscosity-temperature calculator gives the preheating temperature for the atomising viscosity stated in the burner documents, from two measured points of the fuel. The combustion air fan takes its air from the boiler room or the engine room, and the engine room ventilation calculator counts it with the combustion air of the engines when the ventilation of the room is worked out by ISO 8861.
SKV-A · SKVJ-M · SKVG
The maker's marine data sheets describe the SKV-A as a duoblock rotary cup burner for all kinds of marine boilers and the SKVJ-M as a monoblock rotary cup burner for smaller marine boilers, and its marine burner list also carried the SKVG. Some of its boiler tables write the type with a bracketed G, as in SKV-A (G), so copy the letters exactly as the plate shows them.
SKVJG-M · ROTONOX
The SKVJG-M is the maker's current marine burner: a compact monoblock rotary atomiser, built as a liquid-fuel or combination burner and offered for gas, methanol and biofuels as well as heavy fuel, MDO and MGO. Saacke presents ROTONOX as the successor to its SKVG and SKVJG burners, and names both series in its work on methanol as a marine fuel.
DDZ-M
For higher capacity requirements Saacke uses its DDZ pressure atomising technology instead of a rotary cup. Its data sheet places the DDZ-M steam atomising burner on medium and large water-tube boilers, such as auxiliary and main boilers on tankers and FPSOs. The atomiser parts come from a different list than those of the rotary cup types, which is why the designation goes first in the request.
FMB-VS · FMB-VM · FMB-VM-VL · FMB-VD · FMB-HF
Saacke's own fired boilers: vertical side-fired (FMB-VS), vertical water-tube (FMB-VM), water-tube for medium to large outputs (FMB-VM-VL), top-fired D-type (FMB-VD) and horizontal three-pass (FMB-HF), whose rear chamber opens through large maintenance hatches. The suffix after FMB names the build and belongs in the request. Older maker tables also list an FMW fired marine boiler.
CMB-VS · CMB-HF · CMB-VF-LONOX
Combination marine boilers that join exhaust gas and oil firing in one unit. On the CMB-VS the propulsion engine's flue gas does most of the work and the oil-fired side covers additional steam demand. CMB-VS and CMB-VF-LONOX are vertical; the CMB-HF is horizontal, with hatches in the rear wall chamber giving access to the flue gas tubes and the furnace.
EMB/EME-HST · EMB/EME-VST · EMB/EME-VFT
Exhaust gas boilers or economisers that also work as silencers in the exhaust line. HST is horizontal and VST vertical, both smoke-tube designs; the VFT is a vertical forced-circulation economiser built from modules that come out without removing the casing, with fixed connections for water jets and soot blowers. A VFT request should name the module as well as the unit.
GCU evo · GCU compact
On an LNG carrier the Saacke plate may belong to a gas combustion unit rather than a boiler. The GCU burns surplus boil-off gas in an air-cooled steel combustion chamber that fits in the funnel area and works with several blowers. The GCU compact has an oil-fired pilot burner, and its combustion chamber and burner can be removed through the chimney shaft.
Where a Saacke burner comes back to the parts list
Burner and boiler requests tend to start in one of these five areas. Naming the area in the request saves a round of questions.
Rotary cup and its drive
On the rotary cup types the fuel leaves the rim of a spinning cup rather than a nozzle orifice. The cup, its seating and the drive that turns it make up the atomising end of the burner; say which of them is worn or damaged, and send the burner plate with the request.
Oil fittings block and oil flow meter seals
US Coast Guard Safety Alert 08-26 of 9 June 2026 concerns the SKVJ-M 14 Mark I. It traced a high-pressure fuel leak to an O-ring between the oil flow meter and the oil fittings block that had been pinched during assembly. It recommends renewing O-rings and seals at the maker's intervals and by the maker's procedure, with the oil block anti-splash hood fitted as the maker requires. A seal set for this block is a safety item, not a sundry.
Fuel train and preheating
Rapid shut-off valves, the fuel distributor with its separate fuel lines and, on the SKVJG-M, the integrated preheaters are fuel-side items. Which of them apply depends on the fuel the burner fires today, whether heavy fuel, distillate, gas or methanol, so state it in the request. The marine fuel grade reader explains the ISO 8217 grade or trade name the fuel is delivered under.
Control system and its configuration
The same alert found a configuration error that left the external fuel supply pumps energised after a normal shutdown, keeping the lines pressurised up to the burner's rapid shut-off valves. For a control-side item, give the burner control system type and, where the panel shows it, the software version: the hardware alone does not identify the configuration.
Tubes, linings and soot blowers
On Saacke's own boilers the maker's service scope supplies the vocabulary: retubing, insulation and firebox linings, soot blowers and tube bundles. Give the boiler designation with its suffix and, on an EMB/EME-VFT, the module concerned.
What a Saacke request usually lists
Sorted by the part of the plant that gets opened, since an atomiser question and a pressure-part question are answered from different documents.
- Rotary cups, cup seating and drive items on SKV-A, SKVJ-M, SKVG and SKVJG-M burners
- O-ring and seal sets for the oil fittings block and the oil flow meter joint
- Rapid shut-off valves, fuel distributor and fuel line items
- Preheater elements on burners with integrated preheating
- Atomiser parts for DDZ-M steam pressure atomising burners
- Ignition, pilot burner and flame monitoring items
- Combustion air fan, air damper and control system components
- Boiler tubes, firebox linings, insulation, soot blower parts and hatch gaskets on FMB, CMB and EMB/EME units
- GCU burner, pilot burner, blower and combustion chamber internals
What to read off a Saacke plate before sending the RFQ
A superintendent can usually settle a Saacke request from the unit's own plate and a few photographs. Where a plate has been painted over, the burner documentation or an earlier order reference identifies the unit just as well. The RFQ evidence guide covers what to attach.
- The burner designation as stamped: letters, size figure and any Mark suffix, written the way the plate shows it, for example SKVJ-M 14 Mark I
- Any bracketed G or other letter in the designation, copied as written rather than tidied up
- Serial number and year of build, where the plate gives them
- The fuel fired today (heavy fuel, MDO/MGO, gas or methanol) and whether the burner is a combination version
- The boiler's own designation with its suffix (FMB-VS, CMB-HF, EMB/EME-VFT and so on), or the make and model of a boiler from another maker
- Burner control system type and, where shown, the software version
- Photographs of the burner plate, the oil fittings block with the oil flow meter, and the failed part in place
- For a gas combustion unit: GCU evo or GCU compact, and whether the item belongs to the burner, the pilot burner, a blower or the combustion chamber
- Any maker kit the request refers to (SRTP, 5-year or critical spares), the port and the ETA
One Saacke list, several kinds of review
A Saacke request often mixes burner, boiler and GCU items. Each line is placed under its unit first and then marked OEM-route or verified alternative, instead of the whole list being treated under one name.
Start, stop and fuel containment
Oil fittings block seals, rapid shut-off valves, flame monitoring, ignition and the control system govern how the burner starts, stops and holds its fuel. These go to an OEM-route review by default, and since Safety Alert 08-26 the oil flow meter seals belong in this group.
Pressure parts against the approved arrangement
Tubes, pressure-part repairs and safety valves on a Saacke boiler are matched to the approved arrangement for that boiler, so the boiler designation and the class documents come first, and the OEM route is the default.
Items defined by size and material
Gaskets, insulation, soot blower wear items and similar parts defined by dimension and material are ordinary supply questions. Where the buyer's approval requirements allow, a verified alternative can be reviewed for them, with the drawing or measurements and the material data checked before quotation.
Kits named by the maker
Saacke sells predefined spare parts packages: an SRTP kit for a safe return to port, a 5-year kit for the overhaul and a critical spares set for on-board inventory. A request that names one is worked from the kit's content list, line by line; the kit name on its own is not a part number.
Retrofitted burners and mixed plants
Saacke retrofits existing boiler and combustion plants regardless of the original manufacturer, including the replacement and modernisation of burner systems. A Saacke burner can therefore sit on another maker's boiler: the burner is identified from its own plate, and the boiler's make and model travel with the request.
Saacke burners and boilers — what buyers ask
Which Saacke burner designations come up in spare-parts requests?
Mostly the rotary cup types: the SKV-A duoblock, the SKVJ-M monoblock, the SKVG and the current SKVJG-M, with ROTONOX named by the maker as the successor to the SKVG and SKVJG lines. On medium and large water-tube boilers the maker uses the DDZ-M steam pressure atomiser instead. Send the letters exactly as stamped, including any G and any Mark suffix.
The boiler and the burner are both Saacke. Is one plate enough?
No. Saacke builds FMB, CMB and EMB/EME boilers as well as burners, and its product tables paired FMB and CMB boilers with its own SKVJ-M and SKV-A burners. The two plates can carry the same name and still identify two units: the boiler plate covers the pressure part, tubes and linings, the burner plate the atomiser, fuel train and controls. Send both.
What does USCG Safety Alert 08-26 change for an SKVJ-M request?
The alert of 9 June 2026 concerns the SKVJ-M 14 Mark I and an O-ring at the joint between the oil flow meter and the oil fittings block that had been pinched during assembly. It recommends renewing O-rings and seals at the maker's intervals and by the maker's procedure. A seal request for that joint should carry the full designation, the serial number and a photograph of the block, and it is reviewed on the OEM route.
Can a request name a Saacke SRTP or 5-year kit instead of a parts list?
Yes, but the kit name is a package, not a part number. The request is worked from the kit's content list, or from the burner and boiler plates, line by line, with the proposed route marked against each line.
Are Saacke gas combustion units on LNG carriers covered?
Requests for them are handled as an enquiry separate from the boilers. A GCU combines a burner, an air-cooled steel combustion chamber in the funnel area and several blowers, and the GCU compact adds an oil-fired pilot burner. Send the GCU's own plate and its version, evo or compact, and say which of those parts the item belongs to.
Is Vessel Core connected to Saacke?
No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Saacke, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.
Send the burner plate, and the boiler plate with it.
Send the designation exactly as stamped, whether SKV-A, SKVJ-M, SKVJG-M, DDZ-M or a boiler or GCU type, the fuel the burner fires today and the items you need. Photographs of both plates and of the oil fittings block answer most questions before the first quotation.
