Sunflame Burner and Incinerator
Spare Parts Supplier

Rotary cup burners on marine boilers and shipboard incinerators from the Japanese maker Sunflame, read from the burner or incinerator plate and its parts list, so cup, fuel train and flame monitoring items are quoted for the unit on board.

Burner or incinerator first: A Sunflame plate can sit on a boiler burner or on an incinerator, and the two carry different type codes: SDR on the burners named here, OSV on the incinerators. Copy the type exactly as stamped, every letter after the figures included, and add the serial number, so that the parts list of the right unit is opened.

Sunflame burners and incinerators behind parts enquiries

Sunflame Co., Ltd. is a Japanese maker of rotary cup burners for marine boilers and of shipboard incinerators. In a rotary cup burner the fuel reaches a cup spinning at high speed at low pressure; it spreads into a thin film, leaves the rim and is broken into fine droplets by primary air from a dedicated fan. The lines that return on Sunflame burner requisitions follow from that design: the cup and its drive, the primary air fan, the fuel train, the flame monitoring and the control. That fan draws on the air of the room the boiler stands in, and the engine room ventilation calculator takes the combustion air of the boilers together with that of the engines when the ventilation air is worked out.

SDR rotary cup burners

SDR

SDR is the type code of the Sunflame rotary cup burners for marine boilers, and it is the code under which boiler documentation names a Sunflame burner. Copy the full designation as stamped, with every figure and letter after SDR, because the letters alone do not open the right parts list. The burner carries a plate of its own, separate from the boiler, so cup, drive and fuel train items are quoted against the burner plate, the serial and the burner manual.

OSV incinerators · SAI

OSV-600SAI

OSV is the type code of the Sunflame shipboard incinerators. The letters after the figure group belong to the type: an SAI unit and an SDAI unit of the same figure group are listed as separate types by the maker and by independent parts listings alike. Burner, combustion chamber, fan and control items are read against the plate exactly as it is stamped.

OSV incinerators · SDAI

OSV-600SDAI

The SDAI version stands next to the SAI version of the same size. Because the two are different types, door, refractory and burner items are never moved from one parts list to the other on the strength of the figures. The serial settles which build is installed, and other OSV sizes are read from their own plate in the same way.

Wear and control parts

Rotary cup · flame eye · flame eye relay

The rotary cup belongs to the burner, while flame eye and flame eye relay lines come up on Sunflame burner and incinerator requests alike. Each is read from its own marking and item number rather than from the unit's figure group. The relay and the control unit go the OEM route for the type in the parts list, so send the label of the removed relay with the unit plate.

Other plates on the boiler

A burner plate without an SDR code

If the burner plate shows a code other than SDR, send it exactly as it reads; the type is checked from the plate before any part is fixed. A burner of another make on the same boiler, such as a Saacke or a Riello unit, is read on that maker's page.

Wear pattern

What brings a Sunflame unit onto the requisition

A rotary cup burner has fewer fine bores than a pressure-jet burner, but it has moving parts and a flame that has to be proved on every start. These are the faults behind most Sunflame enquiries.

Rotary cup

Carbon on the cup or a damaged rim

The oil film forms on the inner face of the cup and leaves at the rim, so carbon build-up or a dented edge spoils the spray and the flame. Cup cleaning is routine work on any rotary cup burner; a cup renewed for damage is quoted with the burner type, the serial and the seals the work needs.

Flame monitoring

Flame failure at start or in service

A sooted flame eye or a failing relay behind it stops the burner on flame failure even when the flame is good. Note the alarm, clean and test the flame eye first, then send the markings of the flame eye and of the relay together with the burner type.

Fuel train

Strainer, pump and valve faults

A choked strainer, a worn fuel oil pump or a sticking valve shows as an unsteady flame or a burner that will not reach its load. The fuel oil pump, the fuel valves and the pressure switches each have a type of their own in the parts list, and each line is quoted against it.

Incinerator chamber

Refractory wear and lost draught

In an OSV incinerator the chamber lining takes heat on every run and wears over the years, while the flue gas fan has to hold the draught. Refractory is quoted from the drawing and the condition found at inspection, fan items from the fan plate where the fan has one.

Component coverage

Sunflame items that appear on RFQ lines

Grouped the way a rotary cup burner is built. Naming the group on each line saves a round of questions about the part.

  • Rotary cups and cup cleaning items
  • Cup shaft bearings and burner motor items
  • Primary air fan items
  • Fuel oil pumps, oil strainers and fuel valves
  • Solenoid valves and pressure switches
  • Flame eyes and flame eye relays
  • Burner control unit and incinerator control panel items, by the type on the unit
  • Burner tile and refractory items of the incinerator chamber
  • Incinerator flue gas fan parts, against the fan plate
  • Door gaskets and seals of the incinerator
Evidence for the enquiry

Reading a Sunflame plate and parts list

A Sunflame part is quoted from the plate and the manual of the unit it came from. With these details the request can be priced without guessing the burner or the incinerator:

  • Burner or incinerator type exactly as stamped on the plate, every letter included, and the serial number
  • Cup (atomiser) marking or item number and, where the unit has one, the nozzle type
  • Flame detector type from the flame eye body and the type printed on the flame eye relay
  • Control unit type from the burner control unit or the incinerator control panel
  • Item numbers and the parts-list or drawing number from the Sunflame manual
  • Boiler maker and boiler type from the boiler plate when the part is for a burner
  • Photographs of the plate, the burner and the removed part
  • The delivery port for the parts
Supply route

How a Sunflame request is worked

Each line is reviewed as a genuine part or a checked alternative, confirmed before the quote. For a Sunflame unit that review starts from the plate and the parts list, because one part name covers different items on different types.

Flame eyes, relays and controllers on the OEM route

Flame monitoring and control items protect the boiler and the incinerator, so they are quoted for the type named in the parts list or on the removed part. No look-alike relay or flame eye is offered from a photograph.

Standard items on a checked path

Bearings, seals, gaskets and similar catalogue items may sit behind a Sunflame item number. Where the owner accepts it, they go on a checked alternative path once size and material are confirmed from the parts list or the removed part.

Burner and boiler read as two units

The boiler maker's plate and the Sunflame burner plate are read separately. Shell, tube and level control parts belong to the boiler list, while the cup, fan and fuel train belong to the burner list.

Incinerator lines grouped by assembly

On an OSV unit, burner, combustion chamber, fan and control items are read as groups, so a burner overhaul arrives with its seals and flame monitoring items instead of one line short.

Sunflame burner and incinerator parts — questions from chief engineers

The boiler plate shows another maker. Is the burner still read as Sunflame?

Yes, if the burner carries a Sunflame plate. Boiler makers often fit a bought-in burner, so send both plates: the burner plate opens the burner parts list, and the boiler plate covers the boiler itself. Boiler parts are read on pages such as Miura, Kangrim or Aalborg.

Can a rotary cup be quoted from a photograph of the old one?

A photograph helps, but the cup is fixed by the burner type, the serial and the item number in the parts list, or by a marking on the cup itself. Cups are not matched by appearance, because a cup that looks the same may belong to another burner size.

Which flame eye and relay details should I send?

The marking on the flame eye body, the type printed on the relay and the type of the burner control unit, with clear photographs of the labels. These items are quoted for the listed type on the OEM route, never as a substitute picked from a picture.

The incinerator plate reads OSV-600SAI, but the manual covers several versions. Which counts?

Send both as they read, with the serial number. The plate belongs to the unit on board, while a manual may cover more than one version of a type. SAI and SDAI are separate types, so the letters are never dropped from the request.

My incinerator plate reads TeamTec or Detegasa. Is it read here?

No. An incinerator is read against its own maker's type list: TeamTec units on the TeamTec page and Detegasa units on the Detegasa page. The name on the plate routes the enquiry.

Is Vessel Core connected to Sunflame?

No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Sunflame, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.

Sunflame and its SDR and OSV designations are named here because burner and incinerator parts are ordered against the type and serial on the unit's own plate. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with this or any other manufacturer named on this page, and does not present itself as holding one. Sunflame, Saacke, Riello, TeamTec, Detegasa, Miura, Kangrim and Aalborg are the names and trademarks of their owners. The designations on this page appear so that a buyer can match equipment already installed; quoting a component against any of them implies no approval by the maker, and no compatibility or commercial relationship of any kind.

Burner down?

Start with the burner or incinerator plate.

Send the type with every letter and the serial number as they read on the plate, the flame eye and relay markings, the control unit type, the item numbers from the parts list and photographs of the removed parts. Each line is tied to its assembly before a part reference is fixed against it.
