What a Kangrim series letter is actually telling you

Sorted as they are quoted, because the letters do not divide the range by size the way a buyer often assumes: MH and MD are separate designs, not two sizes of one boiler, and the E codes name a different class of equipment again.

Vertical water tube

MB series

MB is not on the product list Kangrim Heavy Industries publishes today, which names PA and PB (cylindrical), PD and MD (two-drum), MH (horizontal) and MS (cylindrical) auxiliary boilers, so an MB boiler is identified from the plate photograph and the boiler drawing number rather than from the current catalogue. Tubes and tube stubs, refractory, burner head items, safety valves, gauge glass sets, level control parts and manhole and handhole gaskets are the recurring lines.

Horizontal and two-drum

MH · MD series

MH names the horizontal auxiliary boilers and MD the two-drum build, and the letter is the identity rather than a size class. Requests cover tubes, refractory, burner and ignition items, safety and feed valves and the gasket sets opened at survey.

Cylindrical and composite

MS · PC series

MS is the smaller cylindrical boiler and PC the cylindrical composite build fired and exhaust-heated in one shell. On a composite unit, state which side the request is for, because the fired side and the gas side are different tube and gasket scopes.

Exhaust gas boilers and economizers

EA · EB · EM series

The E codes are the exhaust gas boilers and economizers: Kangrim builds EA as a smoke tube unit with natural circulation and a steam space, EB as a smoke tube unit with forced circulation and no steam space, and EM as a finned water tube economizer with forced circulation and no steam space. Smoke tubes, finned tube elements, soot blower parts, expansion joints and gaskets are the items, and the request is quoted from the tube or element drawing of the unit itself rather than from the engine.

Letters carry the design, not the size

A Kangrim letter code names the construction it is built to

The letters name the construction and the two-digit number after them names the size within it — MD 01 to MD 07 are seven sizes of one two-drum design — so reading the letters as a size class, or dropping the number, is where a Kangrim line goes wrong first.

Kangrim Heavy Industries of Changwon, Korea, currently lists its auxiliary boilers as PA and PB (cylindrical), PD and MD (two-drum), MH (horizontal) and MS (cylindrical), each built in a ladder of sizes numbered after the letters; MB is not on that current list, and a boiler plated MB is identified from the plate and the boiler drawing. MH and MD are separate designs rather than steps in one line — MH is the horizontal auxiliary build and MD the two-drum build. PC is the composite build, oil-fired and exhaust-gas-heated in one cylindrical boiler, which is the reason a PC enquiry has to say which side is meant before the tube and gasket scope can be read correctly.

The E codes — EA, EB and EM — are a different class of equipment again: exhaust gas boilers and economizers rather than fired auxiliary boilers. EA is a smoke tube unit with natural circulation and its own steam space, EB a smoke tube unit on forced circulation without a steam space, and EM a finned water tube economizer on forced circulation without a steam space. Their recurring items are smoke tubes or finned tube elements, soot blower parts, expansion joints and gaskets, and because the unit sits on the exhaust line rather than the fuel line, a request against one of these codes is quoted from its own tube or element drawing, not from the main engine it happens to be mounted behind.

Send the full type code as marked, letters and number together: for example MD 03 rather than MD, whether the plate reads PA, PB, PD, MD, MH, MS, PC, EA, EB, EM or a code not on the current list, such as MB. On PC, add which side the line concerns; on the E codes, attach the tube or element drawing where one exists. That is enough to open the review.
Component scope

What a Kangrim line resolves to

Grouped as the four series divide, because a tube line on an MB and a stack line on an EA are not the same kind of part.

  • Tubes and tube stubs for the fired boilers, quoted against the full type code and the tube drawing — the PD and MD two-drum builds are water tube designs
  • Refractory sets for the fired boilers, quoted against the shell the request names
  • Burner head items and ignition components across the MB, MH, MD and MS · PC ranges
  • Safety valves, their springs and the sealed setting record
  • Feed valves and the gasket sets opened when a survey requires access
  • Gauge glass sets and level control parts for water level indication
  • Manhole and handhole gaskets for MB and the horizontal auxiliary builds
  • Fired-side tube and gasket items for the fired half of a PC composite unit
  • Gas-side tube and gasket items for the exhaust-heated half of a PC composite unit
  • Smoke tubes for the EA and EB exhaust gas boilers, and finned tube elements for the EM economizer
  • Soot blower parts and expansion joints on the exhaust gas equipment
  • Gaskets for the economizer casing and access points, quoted from the element drawing

A composite PC line needs its side stated before the rest of the kit is quoted, and an economizer line is read from its own element drawing rather than from the engine it sits behind. Broader boiler routing sits on the marine boiler sourcing guide.

Identification data

The fields a Kangrim requisition tends to be missing

Written as an audit of the lines that come back for a second question rather than as a general checklist.

  • The full type code as marked, letters and two-digit number together (for example PB 04 or MD 03), not the letters alone
  • Whether the unit is a fired auxiliary boiler, a composite boiler or an exhaust gas boiler · economizer
  • On a PC composite unit, which side the request concerns — fired or gas
  • On an exhaust gas unit, which type it is — EA or EB smoke tube, or EM finned water tube — and the tube or element drawing where one is available
  • Photographs of the boiler plate, and of the removed component from more than one angle
  • Whether the item comes off the pressure part, the burner, or the water level and control group
  • Class society, the date of the last boiler survey and the certificate requirement
  • For a safety valve: the stamped setting and the maker of the valve fitted
  • The main engine model where an economizer is fitted behind it, kept as context rather than as the identity
  • Vessel and IMO number, the port and the ETA

Tools for this equipment: the valve body marking reader for the size, class and material cast on a safety valve body, and the flange identifier for its flanges. For the gauge glass sets, the gauge glass size finder names a flat glass from its size or a measured length. The steam saturation calculator gives the saturation temperature for a boiler working pressure, or the pressure for a temperature. From the feed water TDS, chloride or conductivity, the blowdown calculator gives the blowdown, and the pipe heat loss calculator the loss from a steam or hot water line.

A letter code is not a size figure: MH and MD, or MS and PC, are separate designs rather than steps on one ladder. Say which letters are stamped on the plate before the rest of the line is quoted. The RFQ evidence guide covers what to attach.
Supply route

A boiler list splits between what a crew fits and what a surveyor accepts

A Kangrim line divides the same way most boiler lines do, and the divide does not follow the series letter.

Gaskets, gauge glass sets, burner head items and ignition components are ordinary consumable and wear questions. Where a buyer's approval requirements allow it, a verified alternative route can be reviewed on lines of this kind, with dimensional data checked at RFQ stage. An OEM-route review can be requested on the same lines instead, or where class requirements call for it.

Tubes, tube stubs, tube elements, refractory and safety valves sit on the other side of the line: they are matched to the approved arrangement for the boiler rather than to a dimension alone, and a safety valve in particular is set on a rig, sealed and accepted against that arrangement before it goes back into service. Vessel Core marks the proposed route against each line rather than assuming one route for the whole list, so an economizer element and a gasket kit can travel in the same request without either being answered the wrong way.

Before you send the RFQ

Kangrim boiler parts — questions buyers ask

My plate reads MB series. What kind of boiler is that?

MB is not on the product list Kangrim publishes today, which names PA, PB, PD, MD, MH and MS auxiliary boilers, PC composite boilers and EA, EB and EM exhaust gas units. Send the plate photograph, the full code with its number and the boiler drawing number, and the boiler is identified from those rather than from the current catalogue. Tubes and tube stubs, refractory, burner head items, safety valves, gauge glass sets, level control parts and manhole and handhole gaskets are the recurring lines.

Is MD just a larger version of MH?

No. MH names the horizontal auxiliary boilers and MD the two-drum build, and the letter is the identity rather than a size class. Requests cover tubes, refractory, burner and ignition items, safety and feed valves and the gasket sets opened at survey.

What separates MS from PC?

MS is the smaller cylindrical boiler and PC the cylindrical composite build fired and exhaust-heated in one shell. On a composite unit, state which side the request is for, because the fired side and the gas side are different tube and gasket scopes.

Can an economizer line be quoted from the main engine?

No. The E codes are the exhaust gas boilers and economizers: EA is a smoke tube unit with natural circulation and a steam space, EB a smoke tube unit with forced circulation and no steam space, and EM a finned water tube economizer with forced circulation and no steam space. Smoke tubes, finned tube elements, soot blower parts, expansion joints and gaskets are the items, and the request is quoted from the tube or element drawing of the unit itself rather than from the engine.

Which Kangrim boiler parts can go on an alternative route?

Gaskets, gauge glass sets, burner head items and ignition components are ordinary consumable and wear questions, and a verified alternative route can be reviewed on them where your approval requirements allow, with dimensional data checked at RFQ stage. Tubes, tube stubs, tube elements, refractory and safety valves are matched to the approved arrangement for the boiler rather than to a dimension alone, and a safety valve is set on a rig, sealed and accepted against that arrangement before it goes back into service. The route is marked against each line, so an economizer element and a gasket kit can travel in one request.
