Perkins Sabre M-series propulsion engines · E44 and E70B generator engines · older M90 and 4.236 — quoted from the engine code and serial

Perkins or Perkins Sabre: Many marine Perkins engines carry the Perkins Sabre name on the rocker cover and in the handbook. The engine code and the serial number on the plate decide the parts; the Sabre name only tells which handbook the ship should have.

Perkins marine engines behind engine-room enquiries

Perkins Engines was founded in Peterborough, England, and has belonged to Caterpillar since 1998. Its marine engines are high-speed diesels found on fishing vessels, tugs and workboats, government vessels, inland vessels and ferries, both on the propeller and driving generating sets. For years the marine line carried the Perkins Sabre name, and those engines are read by an M code; the generator engines carry E codes, and a newer propulsion range again uses M codes with a C suffix.

Generator engines

E44 · E70B

Auxiliary engines launched for generating sets on tugs, fishing vessels, ferries and inland vessels. The E44 is a four-cylinder engine and the E70B a six-cylinder one. Filters, coolant and sea water pump parts and gasket sets are quoted against the engine code and serial; the alternator is a separate line from its own plate.

Generator engines

E70-TAG

The earlier generator engine from which the E70B was developed. A ship with both on board states which one each line is for, because the two engines are not assumed to share every part.

Perkins Sabre, naturally aspirated

M130C · M135

Six-cylinder naturally aspirated propulsion engines of the Sabre family. Typical lines are the sea water pump impeller, anodes, heat exchanger elements and gaskets, fuel and oil filters and the drive belt, each checked against the code and serial.

Perkins Sabre, turbocharged

M185C · M215C · M225Ti · M265Ti · M300Ti

Turbocharged and intercooled Sabre propulsion engines. The letters after the number mark the version and are copied exactly. Charge-air cooler elements, turbocharger gaskets and injector items come into these enquiries next to the cooling and filter lines.

Perkins Sabre, four-cylinder

M92B · M90 · 4.236

The four-cylinder Sabre engine M92B and the engines it was built to replace, the M92, the M90 and the older 4.236. Many still work on small fishing vessels and launches; the plate and the old part are the starting point.

Propulsion, current range

M175C · M200C · M245C

The six-cylinder propulsion range Perkins presented at Metstrade 2025. Parts for these engines are quoted against the full engine code and serial number, as for the older lines.

Component coverage

Perkins engine components that reach an RFQ

The list follows a raw-water cooled marine diesel from the fuel side to the cooling side and then the add-on units. Each line can carry the part number from the parts catalogue or from an earlier order next to the description.

  • Fuel filter elements, pre-filters and water separator bowls
  • Lube oil filters and air filter elements
  • Injectors, injection pump parts and high-pressure pipe seals
  • Cylinder head gaskets, rocker cover gaskets and top and bottom gasket sets
  • Sea water pump impellers and pump repair kits
  • Anodes for heat exchangers and coolers
  • Heat exchanger and charge-air cooler elements, end caps and seals
  • Coolant pump parts, thermostats and hoses
  • Drive belts and tensioner parts
  • Turbocharger gasket sets and turbocharger units
  • Starter motors, charging alternators and engine sensors
Evidence for the enquiry

What to read off a Perkins engine before ordering

Two things are read from the engine's plate before anything else: the engine code and the serial number. A clear photograph of the plate settles most of the points below; the rest come from the ship's own records.

  • Full engine code exactly as printed, for example M225Ti, M130C or E70B
  • Engine serial number from the same plate
  • The name on the rocker cover and the handbook: Perkins or Perkins Sabre
  • Use on board: propulsion engine or generator engine with its own alternator plate
  • Part numbers from the parts catalogue, an earlier invoice or the old part itself
  • Gearbox make and type for a propulsion engine, ordered separately
What a Perkins enquiry gets read against

Supply route review for Perkins marine engines

The same family number can cover different versions, so two engines with similar codes are not assumed to share parts. The engine code and serial are settled first, and the supply route is then chosen line by line.

Code and serial before the family

An M225Ti and an M265Ti look alike in the engine room but are not the same engine. Part numbers are checked against the full code and the serial, not against the family name.

Generator engines on their own plate

An E44 or E70B in a generating set is quoted on its own engine code. The alternator and its regulator are separate lines, read from the alternator plate.

Original reference or accepted equivalent

Parts a surveyor will inspect are quoted on the original reference. Filters, impellers, anodes and belts that carry their own makers' markings can also go on an equivalent-source path for the ship's own spares, within the buyer's list of accepted sources.

Maintenance sets per engine

Filters, the sea water pump impeller, anodes and the belt are usually renewed together at the intervals in the handbook. Quoting them as one set per engine code keeps a job from waiting on a single missing gasket.

From the engine room

Perkins marine engine parts — questions from the engine room

Our engine says Perkins Sabre. Is it covered?

Yes. Perkins Sabre is the name the Perkins marine line carried for years, and these engines are identified in the same way, by the engine code and the serial number on the plate. Send a photograph of the plate with the list of items.

Which data from the plate is needed for a Perkins engine parts enquiry?

The complete engine code with every letter, such as M225Ti or E70B, and the serial number. Add whether the engine drives the propeller or a generator and any part numbers from the parts catalogue or earlier orders.

Can Vessel Core quote parts for an older M90 or 4.236?

Often, yes. Photographs of the plate, the whole engine and the removed part, plus an earlier invoice for the same engine if the ship has one, are usually enough to start. Each line is confirmed before it is quoted, and items revised since the build are named in the reply.

Does Vessel Core repair or overhaul Perkins engines?

No. Vessel Core identifies and supplies spare parts only. The work on board or in the yard stays with the crew or the workshop the owner chooses; the enquiry lists the parts that work needs.

Is Vessel Core connected to Perkins?

No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Perkins, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.

Perkins marine engines are ordered against the engine codes and serial numbers on their plates, so those codes appear here for a buyer to match the engine already on board. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with this or any other manufacturer named on this page, and does not present itself as holding one. Perkins and Perkins Sabre are trademarks of their respective owners. The designations on this page appear so that a buyer can match equipment already installed; quoting a component against any of them implies no approval by the maker, and no compatibility or commercial relationship of any kind.

Perkins engine due for parts?

Send the engine plate and the list of items.

Give the full engine code, the serial number, the items needed and the port. Engine parts, generator items and gearbox lines are quoted separately, so the ship can decide what to renew now and what to keep as a spare.
