CAT 3516 — technical overview
CAT 3516, 3516B and 3516C references can identify different marine propulsion or auxiliary configurations. The 3516 is the 16-cylinder member of the Caterpillar 3500 family and is built around the same cylinder module as the 8-cylinder 3508 and the 12-cylinder 3512 — per-cylinder positions often carry across the family within a generation, while crankshaft, block and manifold positions do not. The complete engine model, serial number and installed build context are needed before component identity or compatibility is confirmed.
3516, 3516B and 3516C are three engines, not three spellings
The letter after the model number is the part of a 3516 enquiry most often left off, and it is the part that decides most of the answer. The earliest 3516 is mechanically governed and fuelled by jerk-type injection pumps. The B and C generations moved to mechanically actuated, electronically controlled unit injectors driven from an engine control module, which changes the fuel system end to end: the pumps, the lines, the injectors, the actuation and the sensing are not shared with the earlier build, and neither is the diagnosis when something goes wrong with them.
Around the running gear the picture is different again. The 3500 family is built on a common cylinder module, so per-cylinder positions frequently carry across the eight-, twelve- and sixteen-cylinder members within a generation, while crankshafts, blocks and manifolds do not. That is useful and it is also a trap: a liner or a head that fits a 3512 of the same generation says nothing about whether a turbocharger, a camshaft or a wiring harness will.
The third thing on the plate that changes parts is the rating. Caterpillar marine ratings run from A through E, and they are duty ratings rather than power labels: the permitted load factor and the hours the engine may run in a year fall as the letter rises. An engine rated for continuous service and one rated for short high-load periods can share a model designation and be built with different components on the fuel and cooling side, so the rating letter belongs in the enquiry next to the model.

A 3500-family parts book is not opened at the model name — it is opened at the serial number prefix and the engine arrangement number from the information plate, and those decide which drawing a position belongs to. Two vessels can both run a 3516C and still take different cylinder heads, injectors or coolers; the rating letter on the same plate sets the duty the engine was sold at. A photograph of the plate, with the part number or description, is usually enough to start.

What a 3516 line is quoted from
Most of what follows is on one plate and takes one photograph. The exception is the position of the component, which nobody can read from a plate and which decides more lines than anything else on this engine.
- Full model as stamped, with the generation letter — 3516C, not 3516
- Engine serial number complete with its three-character prefix, photographed rather than transcribed
- Arrangement number from the same plate, which is what a parts route is keyed to on this maker
- Rating letter, since it changes what was fitted on the fuel and cooling side
- Duty: propulsion, auxiliary generating set or a harbour or standby set, and the reduction gear make where it drives a shaft
- Bank and cylinder number the component came off, because a V16 has two banks and the positions are not interchangeable
- Injector described as a unit injector or as a nozzle and pump, since the two generations do not share the concept
- Turbocharger make and designation from its own plate, and how many are fitted, since this engine carries more than one
- Aftercooler arrangement and whether the installation is keel-cooled, heat-exchanger cooled or raw-water cooled
