D11-670
11-litre 6-cylinder heavy-duty marine diesel, 670 hp. Piston ring sets, liner kits, exhaust valve seats, injection nozzles, cooling water pump assemblies.

The number in a D-series name is litres, not cylinders
A Volvo Penta marine designation is read in two halves, and the first half is misread more often than any other detail on the engine. D4, D6, D8, D11, D13 and D16 name the platform by its approximate displacement in litres. They do not name the cylinder count. A D8 is an in-line six of roughly eight litres, and so are the D11, D13 and D16; only the D4 happens to carry as many cylinders as its badge suggests. An enquiry written on the assumption that a D8 has eight cylinders will describe a head, a liner set or a bearing set in the wrong quantity before anyone has looked at a part number.
The number after the dash is the rated output. D8-450, D8-510 and D8-550 are the same platform at three ratings, and that is not a cosmetic difference: rating changes what is fitted on the fuel and charge-air side, so two engines sharing a platform name can take different components. The rating belongs in the enquiry alongside the platform, which is why D8-510 is a usable line and D8 on its own is not.
The industrial and generating-set designations follow their own logic. A TAD or TWD string carries a numeric block and one or more trailing letters, and engines that differ by a single digit — TAD1640, TAD1641, TAD1642, TAD1643 — are not interchangeable for parts. On those the complete string, every character of it, is the minimum an enquiry can be written from.

Three numbers on the plate, and the drive keeps its own
Volvo Penta puts three separate identifiers on an engine, and they do different jobs. The product designation names the platform and the rating. The product number names the specific build, down to what was fitted at the works. The serial number names the individual engine. A parts route is confirmed against the second and the third, not the first. On an Aquamatic sterndrive or a Forward Drive installation there is a fourth and a fifth: the drive unit and the reverse gear carry their own identification numbers on their own plates, and a line about a drive cannot be answered from the engine plate at all.

- Engine serial number, photographed rather than transcribed
- Drive unit identification number and reverse gear number where the line touches the drive or the gear
- Where the number was read from — the plate sits on the block, and many engines repeat it on a decal on the cover
- Installation: inboard shaft line, IPS pod, sterndrive, generating set or industrial duty
- For a generating set, the alternator make and its own plate data, since the alternator is a separate maker
- Model or build year, because option content changes inside a single designation
- Cylinder number the component came off, for any running-gear line
- Old part number and the catalogue page it came from, treated as a starting point rather than a conclusion
- Bearing shells with the undersize stated, and ring sets quoted per cylinder rather than per ring
- Injector, high-pressure pump and common-rail components separated by name, because the three are different orders
- Heat exchanger, charge-air cooler and keel-cooling parts distinguished, since the cooling arrangement varies by installation rather than by platform
- Running hours and any earlier reconditioning of the item itself
- Photographs of the plate, of the cover decal and of the component in place
