PowerTech 4045 · 6068 · 6090 · 6135 propulsion and generator-drive engines — quoted from the full engine code and serial

Reading a John Deere code: In a code such as 6068SFM85 the first figure is the number of cylinders and the next three give the displacement class. The letters that follow mark the build, M stands for marine, and the closing figures mark the emissions generation. The same four figures can belong to a propulsion engine and to a generator-drive engine, so the code is copied in full.

John Deere marine engines behind engine-room enquiries

John Deere Power Systems builds PowerTech diesel engines that work on workboats and fishing vessels, both on the propeller and as constant-speed engines for generating sets. Marine codes follow one pattern: four figures for the cylinder count and the displacement class, a build letter, F and M, and an emissions figure. The current marine engines carry 85 at the end; earlier engines carry 75 or 76.

PowerTech 4045

4045AFM85 · 4045TFM85

The four-cylinder marine engines. The 4045AFM85 is a propulsion engine introduced to take over from the earlier six-cylinder 6068TFM75 and 6068TFM76, and the 4045TFM85 is the generator-drive build. Filters, the sea water pump impeller, anodes and gasket sets are quoted against the full code and serial.

PowerTech 6068

6068AFM85 · 6068SFM85

Six-cylinder marine engines with a high-pressure common-rail fuel system, offered for propulsion and, under the same code, as constant-speed auxiliary and generator engines. The use on board goes into the enquiry, since the two builds are set up differently.

PowerTech 6090

6090AFM85 · 6090SFM85 · 6090HFM85

The middle six-cylinder family for propulsion and generator drive. The HFM85 build is the radiator-cooled engine for generating sets and auxiliary duty, so cooling items for it differ from those of a keel- or heat-exchanger-cooled propulsion engine.

PowerTech 6135

6135AFM85 · 6135SFM85 · 6135HFM85

The largest PowerTech marine family, for propulsion and generator drive, with a radiator-cooled HFM85 build for generating sets. Injectors, cooler elements, turbocharger gaskets and filter sets are quoted against the complete code and serial.

Earlier marine codes

6068TFM75 · 6068TFM76 · 6081AFM75

Engines from before the 85-coded generation, still at work on vessels today. TFM75 marked a propulsion build and TFM76 a generator-drive build of the 6068. Parts are matched to the old code and serial, and items revised since the build are named in the reply.

Component coverage

John Deere engine components that reach an RFQ

The list follows a marine diesel from the fuel side to the cooling side and the add-on units. Each line can carry the part number from the parts catalogue or from an earlier order next to the description.

  • Fuel filter elements, pre-filters and water separators
  • Lube oil filters, crankcase ventilation filters and air filter elements
  • Injectors, common-rail items and high-pressure fuel pump parts
  • Cylinder head gaskets, rocker cover gaskets and overhaul gasket sets
  • Sea water pump impellers, wear plates and pump repair kits
  • Anodes for heat exchangers and coolers
  • Heat exchanger, keel cooler and charge-air cooler elements and gaskets
  • Radiator and coolant items for HFM85 generating set engines
  • Coolant pump parts, thermostats, hoses and drive belts
  • Turbocharger gasket sets and turbocharger units
  • Starter motors, charging alternators, sensors and wiring harness items
Evidence for the enquiry

What to read off a John Deere engine before ordering

Two things come off the engine plate first: the full engine code and the engine serial number. A clear photograph of the plate settles most of the points below; the rest come from the ship's own records.

  • Full engine code exactly as printed, for example 6068SFM85 or 6090HFM85
  • Engine serial number from the same plate
  • Use on board: propulsion engine or generator-drive engine with its own alternator plate
  • Cooling: heat exchanger, keel cooler or radiator
  • Part numbers from the parts catalogue, an earlier invoice or the old part itself
  • Gearbox make and type for a propulsion engine, ordered separately
What a John Deere enquiry gets read against

Supply route review for John Deere marine engines

One family number covers several builds, so two engines with the same four figures are not assumed to share parts. The full code and serial are settled first, and the supply route is then chosen line by line.

The full code, not the family

A 6068AFM85 and a 6068SFM85 share four figures but not every part. Part numbers are checked against the complete code and the serial, not against the family number alone.

Propulsion and generator builds apart

The same code can exist as a propulsion engine and as a constant-speed generator engine, and the HFM85 builds are radiator-cooled. The use and the cooling go into every enquiry; the alternator is a separate line from its own plate.

Original reference or accepted equivalent

Parts a surveyor will inspect are quoted on the original reference. Filters, impellers, anodes and belts that carry their own makers' markings can also go on an equivalent-source path for the ship's own spares, within the buyer's list of accepted sources.

Cooling decides the cooling lines

Keel coolers, heat exchangers with a sea water pump and the radiators of HFM85 generating set engines each bring their own set of cooling items. Naming the cooling arrangement up front stops a sea water impeller being quoted for an engine that has none.

From the engine room

John Deere marine engine parts — questions from the engine room

What do the figures in a John Deere marine engine code mean?

The first figure is the number of cylinders and the next three give the displacement class, so 6068 is a six-cylinder engine of the 6.8 class. The letters after it mark the build, M stands for marine, and the closing figures mark the emissions generation. Send the code in full.

Which data from the plate is needed for a John Deere engine parts enquiry?

The complete engine code, such as 6068SFM85, and the engine serial number. Add whether the engine drives the propeller or a generator, how it is cooled, and any part numbers from the parts catalogue or earlier orders.

Can Vessel Core quote parts for an older 6068TFM75 or 6081AFM75?

Often, yes. Photographs of the plate, the whole engine and the removed part, plus an earlier invoice for the same engine if the ship has one, are usually enough to start. Each line is confirmed before it is quoted.

Does Vessel Core carry out work on John Deere engines?

No. The service covers identifying and supplying parts. Mechanics, overhauls and commissioning are arranged by the owner with a workshop of their choice, and the enquiry is built from the job list that workshop prepares.

Is Vessel Core connected to John Deere?

No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with John Deere, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.

John Deere marine engines are ordered against the engine codes and serial numbers on their plates, so those codes appear here for a buyer to match the engine already on board. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with this or any other manufacturer named on this page, and does not present itself as holding one. John Deere and PowerTech are trademarks of their respective owners. The designations on this page appear so that a buyer can match equipment already installed; quoting a component against any of them implies no approval by the maker, and no compatibility or commercial relationship of any kind.

John Deere engine due for parts?

Send the engine plate and the list of items.

List the engine code from the plate, its serial, what the engine drives and how it is cooled, then the items and the port. Generator and gearbox items sit on separate lines from the engine itself.
