Three ranges, one identity rule

What a Deno compressor code actually names

Deno builds three compressor ranges for the engine room: starting-air piston compressors, air-cooled (2L, 3L, L3, L4) or water-cooled (2K, 3K), with diesel-driven and hand-operated emergency units alongside; DSR and DSD rotary screw compressors; and DPA service-air piston compressors. The full model code together with the drive execution on the screw range — not the leading letters alone — is what identifies the specific machine and its spare-parts scope.

L · starting-air piston

L series (2L · 3L · L3 · L4 · L2-20 · L2-35) and water-cooled K series (2K · 3K)

The L codes are Deno's air-cooled, multi-stage, direct-driven starting-air piston compressors; the water-cooled starting-air machines carry K codes instead, such as 2K35 or 3K56. In Deno's own model list the figure written next to the letter is the cylinder count — 2L and 2K models have two cylinders, 3L, L3 and 3K models three, L4 four — and the figures that follow tell the models apart, so the code is copied whole. Valve assemblies, piston and ring sets, crankshaft and connecting-rod bearings, gasket sets and cooler elements are the recurring lines, and the cooler parts of an air-cooled L and a water-cooled K machine do not cross.

DSR · DSD · screw compressors

DSR and DSD screw compressors

DSR is the belt-driven and DSD the direct-driven oil-injected rotary screw range, and the drive execution is part of the machine's identity rather than a footnote — a screw line is worked differently from a piston one. Both are built air-cooled or water-cooled; on the DSR, fresh-water or seawater cooling is an option on an air-cooled standard, so the cooling fitted is stated with the code. The air end, the oil separator element, the filters, the thermostatic valve and the belt set or coupling are the recurring items, and which drive is fitted decides some of them.

DPA · service-air piston

DPA service-air compressors

DPA covers Deno's air-cooled, belt-driven piston compressors on service-air duty — a different job from the L series' starting-air role even though both are piston machines. Belts, valve assemblies, rings, gaskets and the intake filter are the recurring lines, and it is worth naming the service-air machine separately from the starting-air one when both sit on the same request.

Maker identity

Reading a Deno compressor code

Deno Compressors B.V., based in the Netherlands, traces its compressor design and construction back to 1918, holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification, and states classification-society type approval for its starting-air range. On board, the full model code and, on the screw range, the drive execution actually fitted identify the machine — not the leading letters on their own.

Not every Deno line names the same job

A starting-air piston line and a service-air line are not interchangeable

The three ranges sit close together on paper and far apart on the bench, and confusing them is the most common way a Deno enquiry stalls.

The L series and DPA are both piston compressors, but they are built for different duties: the L range starts the main engine, and DPA supplies general service or working air. The parts do not cross between them even where a valve assembly or a ring set looks similar on the bench, so a request is read against which duty the compressor actually serves rather than against "a Deno piston compressor" in general.

On the screw range, DSR and DSD are both oil-injected rotary screw machines but differ in how they are driven — DSR by belt, DSD direct — and that execution decides the coupling or belt set alongside the air end and oil separator element that are matched to the model. The drive execution actually fitted is confirmed before either is quoted.

Say which range and which duty: the L and K series (starting air), DSR/DSD (screw, by drive execution) and DPA (service air) each carry their own parts scope. How a plate photograph becomes a priced list is set out on the how we work page.
Component scope

What a Deno line resolves to

Grouped by range, because a starting-air line, a screw line and a service-air line are not asking for the same kind of part.

  • Valve assemblies, piston and ring sets for the L starting-air range
  • Crankshaft and connecting-rod bearings, gasket sets and cooler elements
  • Air end and oil separator element for the DSR/DSD screw range
  • Filters, thermostatic valve and coupling on the screw range, matched to the drive execution
  • Belts, valve assemblies, rings, gaskets and intake filter for the DPA service-air range
  • Complete overhaul kits by model code and drive execution

A piston range and a screw range are stripped for different reasons and different parts — say which range, and on the screw range which drive execution, is fitted before the rest of the list is quoted.

Evidence for the enquiry

Plate data that makes a Deno enquiry quotable

The compressor's own plate is the reference for a correct match — Deno's own spare-parts form has a field for a photograph of it. With the items below an enquiry can usually be priced in one pass; without them it comes back with a clarifying question first.

  • Full model code as marked (e.g. 2L-35, L3-75, 2K35, DSR, DSD, DPA2)
  • Drive execution on the screw range — belt-driven DSR or direct-driven DSD
  • Cooling: air-cooled or water-cooled (fresh or sea water)
  • Duty actually served — main starting air, emergency starting air or service/working air
  • Compressor serial number
  • Photograph of the compressor plate and of the part being requested

Tools for this equipment: the pressure gauge selector for the stage gauges and the thread identifier for the pipe and drain connections. The air receiver calculator gives the filling time of a starting air receiver between two pressures from its volume and the compressor delivery. The reverse check is the receiver fill test calculator: from a timed fill between two pressures it gives the free air delivery the compressor reached, and the per cent of rated.

Supply route

A screw air end and a gasket kit are not answered alike

Requests naming Deno compressor components arrive mixed across the three ranges, and the review differs by what the line actually touches.

Complete piston and screw assemblies, and anything supplied as a matched set against the compressor serial — a full valve-and-ring set, a screw air end with its own oil separator element — go to an OEM-route review by default, since the parts inside a matched set are fitted to each other before they are fitted to the compressor.

Elastomer seals, gaskets, filters, coupling elements and other size-and-material consumables are ordinary supply questions, and a verified alternative can be reviewed on them where a buyer's approval requirements allow, with dimensional and material documentation checked at RFQ stage. Vessel Core is an independent spare parts supplier and marks the proposed route against each line on the list, so a request naming more than one range is answered range by range, not as one blanket route.

Deno compressor parts — questions from the engine room

Which Deno compressor codes come up most often in spare-parts requests?

The L codes lead — 2L, 3L, L3, L4, L2-20 and L2-35 — the multi-stage direct-driven piston compressors reached for on starting-air duty, with the water-cooled 2K and 3K machines on the same duty. DSR and DSD, the belt-driven and direct-driven rotary screw range, and DPA, the service-air piston range, follow behind. Send the full code exactly as stamped before a parts list is worked up.

What is the difference between Deno's DSR and DSD screw compressors?

DSR is Deno's belt-driven oil-injected rotary screw compressor and DSD the direct-driven version, and the drive execution is part of the machine's identity rather than a detail. Both are built air-cooled or water-cooled. The air end and the oil separator element are matched to the model, and the coupling or belt set follows the drive execution actually fitted.

Are the L-series starting-air compressor and the DPA service-air compressor interchangeable?

No. Both are piston machines, but the L series is built for starting-air duty and DPA for service or working air, and their parts do not cross. Where both compressors sit in the same engine room, name which one a request concerns rather than sending a general Deno enquiry.

What should a Deno compressor spare-parts RFQ contain?

A workable request lists the full model code as marked, the drive execution on the screw range (belt-driven DSR or direct-driven DSD), whether the duty is main or emergency starting air or service air, and the compressor serial number. A photograph of the compressor plate and of the part being requested settles most of the remaining questions in one pass.

Is Vessel Core connected to Deno?

No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no dealership, distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Deno, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.

Three ranges under one maker name is the reason the full model code and, on the screw range, the drive execution are printed here in full. Vessel Core holds no dealership, distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Deno Compressors B.V. or with any other manufacturer named here, and does not present itself as holding one. Deno is a trademark of its owner. The L, K, DSR, DSD and DPA designations appear so that a buyer can match equipment already installed; quoting a component against any of them implies no approval by the maker, and no compatibility or commercial relationship of any kind.
