One Sasakura plate family covers separation and freshwater generation

The bilge separator and PURELIO are oily water separators; X, WX and Aquario sit on the same plate family but do freshwater generation instead, and the series letter on the plate is what tells the two apart.

Earlier separator series

SHT series

Before PURELIO, Sasakura's oily water separator line was the SHT series, developed to meet the IMO bilge-water rules applied from 1 January 2005 and EU Marine Equipment Directive type approval. Sasakura says PURELIO keeps the SHT series' ease of use, so on an older ship the plate may read SHT rather than PURELIO. Send the series, model and serial number as stamped; the separator's inserts, gaskets, monitor parts and automatic valves are then quoted for that series.

Two-stage separator, current line

PURELIO

PURELIO is Sasakura's current oily water separator: a two-stage unit built to treat bilge water to a stricter limit than the 15 ppm required by MEPC.107(49), with fewer parts than the SHT series it follows. Sasakura changed how the second-stage coalescer is mounted to make maintenance easier, and states that PURELIO can be fitted as a replacement on existing ships, so a PURELIO may sit on an older vessel in place of an SHT. Coalescer cartridges, filter inserts, gaskets and the monitor's measuring cell are the recurring lines; confirm from the plate which of the two series is fitted.

Freshwater generators

X · WX · Aquario

Sasakura's freshwater generators use waste heat from the diesel engine's cooling water to evaporate seawater under vacuum. The X series is the tubular generator, built as the XE or XM type according to how the cooling seawater is supplied and how the ejector pump is arranged; WX is its double-effect development for ships with less waste heat; Aquario is the plate-type unit, built as RE or RM. Tube or plate packs, gaskets, ejector parts and the pump wear set are the items, and the series and type on the plate decide which of those the request is about.

Reading the plate, not assuming the model

Two product families, one nameplate style

A Sasakura plate can name a compact coalescer separator, a current two-stage plant, or a freshwater generator — and the plate itself is what has to settle which.

Sasakura has built oily water separators since 1962. The series before PURELIO is the SHT, which the maker developed for the IMO bilge-water rules applied from 2005 and for EU Marine Equipment Directive type approval. A plate reading SHT is therefore a named series, not an anonymous "bilge separator": its series letters, model figures and serial number are sent exactly as stamped, and the inserts, gaskets, monitor parts and automatic valves are quoted against that series rather than against PURELIO.

PURELIO is Sasakura's current oily water separator, a two-stage unit whose second-stage coalescer is designed to come out for servicing without pulling the plant off the vessel. An older installation, however, may still carry the generic bilge-separator nameplate rather than the PURELIO name, so which generation is actually fitted has to be confirmed before the coalescer cartridges, filter inserts, gaskets or the monitor's measuring cell are quoted.

The same maker's plate is also met on freshwater generators. X is the tubular series and WX its double-effect development; Aquario is the plate type. Sasakura also builds submerged-tube and two-stage flash generators for steam-turbine ships such as LNG carriers, so a Sasakura generator on a steam ship is not assumed to be an X. The series and type on the plate decide whether a request is about tube or plate packs, gaskets, ejector parts or the pump wear set.

Confirm the generation and the duty before the parts: a plate reading only "bilge separator" is sent as written, a plate that might be PURELIO needs the generation confirmed, and X, WX or Aquario points to freshwater generation rather than separation. Add that to the request and the review can start.
Component scope

What a Sasakura line resolves to

Grouped as the bilge separator, PURELIO and the freshwater generators divide, because a coalescer-line request and an ejector-line request do not ask for the same kind of part.

  • Coalescer inserts for the bilge separator
  • Filter inserts for the bilge separator
  • Gaskets for the bilge separator
  • Monitor parts for the bilge separator
  • The automatic valve set on the bilge separator
  • Coalescer cartridges for the PURELIO second stage
  • Filter inserts for PURELIO
  • Gaskets for PURELIO
  • The PURELIO monitor's measuring cell
  • Tube or plate packs for the X, WX and Aquario freshwater generators
  • Gaskets for the X, WX and Aquario freshwater generators
  • Ejector parts for the X, WX and Aquario freshwater generators
  • The pump wear set for the X, WX and Aquario freshwater generators

Say whether the request is a separator line or a freshwater-generator line before the rest is quoted. Broader engine-room routing sits on engine room equipment.

Identification data

The fields a Sasakura requisition tends to be missing

Written as an audit of the lines that come back for a second question rather than as a general checklist.

  • Whether the nameplate reads bilge separator, PURELIO, X, WX or Aquario
  • The series and model exactly as stamped: SHT on Sasakura's earlier separators, PURELIO on the current two-stage unit, with the serial number
  • Which generation is actually fitted where a PURELIO name is expected but the plate only reads bilge separator
  • Whether the request is for the oily water separator side or the freshwater generator side of the family
  • For a freshwater generator, the series and type as stamped: X (XE or XM), WX, Aquario (RE or RM), or another Sasakura type such as a submerged-tube or flash-type plant on a steam-turbine ship
  • Photographs of the plate and of the second-stage coalescer housing where a PURELIO cartridge is requested
  • Vessel and IMO number, the port and the ETA
One plate family, two very different parts lists. Confirm which duty the plate belongs to before the line is opened. The RFQ evidence guide covers what to attach.
Supply route

Which generation and which duty decide the route

A Sasakura line splits along the same lines the identification does: separator generation first, then duty, then part.

Gaskets, filter and coalescer inserts, ejector parts and the pump wear set are ordinary consumable questions once the model and generation are confirmed, and a verified alternative can be reviewed against those facts. The bilge separator's lack of confirmed internal series numbering means a proposed alternative is checked against the figures actually on the plate rather than against a catalogue entry.

Monitor measuring cells and automatic valve set components are read against the generation actually fitted before an alternative is proposed, since a PURELIO second stage and an older bilge-separator plant are not built the same way even when the general fault looks similar. Complete tube or plate packs on the X, WX and Aquario freshwater generators are reviewed with the series letter and the dimensional match in mind, since that is what a pack actually has to fit. Vessel Core marks the proposed route against each line rather than against the Sasakura name as a whole.

Before you send the RFQ

Sasakura separators and freshwater generators — questions buyers ask

Our plate has no series number, just "bilge separator." Can you still quote parts?

Yes. Send everything the plate shows, exactly as it reads, with a photograph. Sasakura's separator before PURELIO was the SHT series, so look for SHT and a model figure on the plate or in the instruction manual. The inserts, gaskets, monitor parts and automatic valves are then quoted against that model.

How do I know if our separator is a PURELIO or the older bilge-separator line?

Check the nameplate first. PURELIO is Sasakura's current oily water separator, a two-stage unit with a second-stage coalescer designed to come out for servicing without pulling the plant off the vessel, but an older installation may still carry the generic bilge-separator nameplate rather than the PURELIO name. Confirm which generation is fitted before the coalescer cartridges and filter inserts are quoted.

Our nameplate says X or WX, not a separator model. Is that a different product?

It is a freshwater generator, not an oily water separator. X is Sasakura's tubular vacuum generator, built as the XE or XM type; WX is the double-effect version developed from it; Aquario is the plate-type unit, built as RE or RM. Tube or plate packs, gaskets, ejector parts and the pump wear set are quoted against the series and type on the plate.

What actually wears on a PURELIO's second stage?

The coalescer cartridges, filter inserts, gaskets and the monitor's measuring cell are the recurring lines. Sasakura changed how the second-stage coalescer is mounted on PURELIO to make maintenance easier; send a photograph of the second-stage housing with the cartridge request.

Can an alternative element be reviewed instead of the OEM part?

Only against the approval. An oily water separator is type-approved as an assembled arrangement, under an approval issued by the flag Administration or a recognised organisation acting for it, under the IMO resolution the unit was built against (MEPC.107(49) on later units, MEPC.60(33) on older installations), and recorded on the Type Approval Certificate. The coalescer cartridges, filter inserts and monitor parts should correspond to the configuration named in that approval, so a verified alternative is reviewed against the certificate reference rather than against the PURELIO name alone.

Is Vessel Core connected to Sasakura?

No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no dealership, distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Sasakura, and quoting a component against the bilge separator, PURELIO, X, WX or Aquario names implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.

The designations on this page identify equipment already installed on board and are printed here for that reason. Vessel Core holds no dealership, distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Sasakura or any other manufacturer named on this page, and does not present itself as holding one. Sasakura and PURELIO are trademarks of their owner. The bilge separator, PURELIO, X, WX and Aquario names are used here for identification only; quoting a component against any of them implies no approval by the maker, no interchangeability and no commercial relationship of any kind.

Have a Sasakura separator or freshwater generator to identify?

Submit your RFQ now.

Send your Sasakura request — bilge separator, PURELIO, or the X, WX or Aquario freshwater generator range — with a photograph of the unit's own plate. No internal series numbering is confirmed for the bilge separator line, so the figures as printed on the plate are what identify it.
