B33:45 · B32:40 · C25:33 diesels and their gas twins · older K and BRM engines — quoted from the engine type and serial number

Five names on one engine line: Bergen engines have left the works under Normo, BMV, Bergen Diesel, Rolls-Royce and Bergen Engines plates. The engine type and the serial number decide the parts; the name on the plate only says which period the manuals come from.

Bergen engines behind engine-room enquiries

Bergen engines are medium-speed four-stroke engines built near Bergen in Norway. The works began as the diesel division of Bergens Mekaniske Verksteder, became BMV Maskin, then Bergen Diesel under the Ulstein group, then part of Rolls-Royce, and since the last day of 2021 Bergen Engines AS has belonged to Langley Holdings. The current designations put the bore and stroke in the name and pair every liquid-fuel engine with a lean-burn gas engine that carries a name of its own. They work as main engines and as generating sets on ferries, offshore vessels, fishing vessels and tugs.

B series, liquid fuel

B33:45L · B33:45V

The current larger liquid-fuel engine, built in-line (L) and as a V engine. It succeeded the B32:40 as the main platform, so an enquiry states which of the two is on board. Cylinder heads, liners, pistons and rings, bearings and injection items are quoted against the full type and the serial.

B series, liquid fuel

B32:40

The earlier liquid-fuel platform, in-line and V, used for propulsion and in generating sets. Many are still at work on ferries and offshore tonnage. The plate may carry a Bergen Diesel or Rolls-Royce name; cylinder heads, liners, pistons, bearings, nozzles and gasket kits are matched to the type and serial.

C series, liquid fuel

C25:33L

The smaller in-line liquid-fuel engine, for propulsion and for generating sets, and able to run on heavy fuel oil. Pistons, fuel pump plungers, valves and gasket sets are quoted against the engine type, the serial and the duty, because a propulsion engine and a generating set are set up differently.

B series, gas

B36:45L · B36:45V

The lean-burn gas twin of the B33:45. Its main structural parts are shared with the B33:45, but the gas admission, ignition and control items are its own, so the plate decides which list applies.

Gas engines

C26:33L · B35:40

The gas twins of the C25:33 and the B32:40. Base engine items can resemble the diesel twin while gas valves, pre-chambers and ignition parts differ, so the gas type is named in every enquiry line.

Older engines

K · K-G4 · BRM

Engines from before the B and C series: the K family and the K-G4 gas engine derived from it, and the BRM engines. Their plates often read Normo, BMV or Bergen Diesel. The full type with its letters and cylinder figure is copied exactly from the plate, and photographs of the plate and the removed part are the next evidence.

Component coverage

Bergen engine components that reach an RFQ

The list follows a medium-speed engine from the combustion space outwards. Each line can carry the part number from the engine's parts catalogue or from an earlier order next to the description.

  • Cylinder heads, inlet and exhaust valves, valve seats and valve guides
  • Cylinder liners, liner seal rings and anti-polishing rings
  • Pistons, piston rings, gudgeon pins and connecting rod bearings
  • Main bearings, thrust bearing parts and crankcase door seals
  • Fuel injection pumps, plungers and barrels, injector nozzles and high-pressure pipes
  • Gas admission valves, pre-chamber parts and ignition items on the gas engines
  • Governor and engine control items, read from their own labels
  • Lube oil and cooling water pump parts, thermostatic valve elements and cooler gaskets
  • Turbocharger gasket sets and charge-air cooler elements, quoted from the turbocharger plate
  • Top overhaul and complete engine gasket sets, O-rings and seal kits
Evidence for the enquiry

What to read off a Bergen engine before ordering

Two things come off the engine plate first: the full engine type and the serial number. A square-on photograph of the plate settles most of the points below; the rest come from the ship's records.

  • Engine type exactly as stamped, for example B33:45L or C25:33L, with the cylinder figure and every letter
  • Engine serial number from the same plate
  • The name on the plate: Normo, BMV, Bergen Diesel, Rolls-Royce or Bergen Engines
  • Fuel: liquid-fuel engine or lean-burn gas engine
  • Duty on board: main engine or generating set
  • Part numbers from the parts catalogue, an earlier invoice or the old part itself
  • Turbocharger make and type from the turbocharger's own plate
What a Bergen enquiry gets read against

Supply route review for Bergen engines

Because one engine line has carried five maker names and pairs every diesel with a gas engine, two engines that look alike are not assumed to share parts. The type and serial are settled first, then the route is chosen line by line.

Type and serial before the name

A Bergen Diesel plate and a Bergen Engines plate can sit on engines of the same family that differ in many items. Part numbers are checked against the full type and the serial; the maker name only says which set of manuals to look in.

Diesel and gas twins kept apart

A B36:45 shares its main structure with the B33:45, but injection, gas admission and ignition parts are not swapped between the twins. Every line names the exact type from the plate.

Original reference or accepted equivalent

Parts a class surveyor will inspect are quoted on the original reference. Gaskets, O-rings and filter elements that carry their own makers' markings can also go on an equivalent-source path for the ship's own spares, within the buyer's list of accepted sources.

Older engines without a clear plate

For a K or BRM engine whose plate has worn, photographs of the engine, the removed part and any cast or stamped numbers are matched against earlier order lines. If an item was revised after the engine was built, the reply says so and the ship decides.

From the engine room

Bergen engine parts — questions from the engine room

Our engine plate reads Bergen Diesel or Rolls-Royce, not Bergen Engines. Is it covered?

Yes. Bergen Diesel and Rolls-Royce Marine Engines - Bergen are earlier names of the same works that trades as Bergen Engines today, so these engines are identified the same way, by the engine type and serial number on the plate. Send a photograph of the plate with the list of items.

What does a Normo plate on an old engine mean?

Normo was a group of western Norwegian engine makers in which Bergens Mekaniske Verksteder built the engine itself while the other members supplied parts. A Normo engine is therefore treated as an older Bergen-built engine, and the type stamped on the plate is the starting point.

Which data from the plate is needed for a Bergen engine parts enquiry?

The full engine type with its letters and cylinder figure, such as B33:45L or C25:33L, and the serial number. Add whether it is a liquid-fuel or a gas engine, whether it drives the propeller or a generator, and any part numbers from the parts catalogue or earlier orders.

Does Vessel Core overhaul Bergen engines?

No. Vessel Core identifies and supplies spare parts only. The work on board or in the yard stays with the crew or the workshop the owner chooses; the enquiry lists the parts that work needs.

Is Vessel Core connected to Bergen?

No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Bergen, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.

Bergen engines are ordered against the engine types and serial numbers on their plates, so those types appear here for a buyer to match the engine already on board. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with this or any other manufacturer named on this page, and does not present itself as holding one. Bergen, Bergen Engines, Normo and Rolls-Royce are trademarks of their respective owners. The designations on this page appear so that a buyer can match equipment already installed; quoting a component against any of them implies no approval by the maker, and no compatibility or commercial relationship of any kind.

Bergen engine due for parts?

Send the engine plate and the list of items.

Give the full engine type, the serial number, the items needed and the port. Engine parts, turbocharger items and governor lines are quoted separately, so the ship can decide what to renew now and what to keep as a spare.
