Governor & Actuator Parts

PRIAMOS, HELENOS and XIOS UC digital governors, StG electric actuators and Regulateurs Europa hydraulic governors — read from two plates, the control unit and the actuator, then quoted by OEM route or verified alternative.

Maker note: Maker names help identify equipment and prepare an RFQ. Vessel Core has no agreement of any kind with HEINZMANN GmbH & Co. KG or with Regulateurs Europa B.V.: no distribution, representation or partnership arrangement, and no appointment by either. The PRIAMOS, HELENOS, XIOS, StG and RE designations below are printed so that a plate can be matched to an enquiry. A designation on this page does not mean the item is held, nor that it fits a given engine.

The Heinzmann governors and actuators behind engine-room enquiries

HEINZMANN GmbH & Co. KG is a family business founded in 1897 and headquartered in Schönau in the Black Forest, supplying engine management components and systems for combustion engines, generators and turbines. On board, the maker lists its governors for main propulsion engines with or without a controllable-pitch propeller, several engines driving one shaft, shaft-generator drives and diesel-electric plants, taking the speed setpoint and gearbox clutch commands straight from the bridge control. For a shaft generator or a diesel-electric set, the motor speed calculator gives the supply frequency from the shaft speed and the pole count. The hydraulic side of the range comes from Regulateurs Europa, part of the HEINZMANN Group since 2005. A Heinzmann governor is rarely one box: it is a control unit, marked DC or KG, driving a separate actuator, marked StG, and the system name on the cabinet often records which pair is fitted.

Digital governor · PRIAMOS

PRIAMOS I, II and III — DC 1-03 and DC 1-04

Heinzmann's first generation of digital speed governors, where the Roman numeral names the pairing. PRIAMOS I and II use the DC 1-03 control unit with StG 16/30/40 or StG 64/90 actuators; PRIAMOS III uses the DC 1-04 with the StG 180. The maker has replaced the range with XIOS UC but still lists DC 1-03 and DC 1-04 as a replacement device and spare part.

Digital governor · XIOS

XIOS UC and XIOS UC Marine

The multi-functional, modular governor the maker names as the follow-up product for PRIAMOS DC 1-03 / DC 1-04. It carries its own I/O system, so an enquiry states which actuator it drives and which engine it controls, not only its own type.

Digital governor · HELENOS, PANDAROS

HELENOS DC 2-02 and PANDAROS DC 6

Two further digital ranges that carry the maker's Ships marking. HELENOS is offered in variants I, III, IV and V, each defined by the actuator it is paired with, so the variant number belongs on the enquiry line next to DC 2-02. PANDAROS is the DC 6 range.

Analogue governor · KG

KG 6/10, KG 16/30/40 and KG 2010/2040/2080

Analogue control units, also designated E 6 / E 10, E 16 / E 30 / E 40 and E 2010 / E 2040 / E 2080, each paired with the StG actuators that share its numbers. Heinzmann names its DC 9 digital governor as the follow-up product for its analogue speed governors.

Electric actuator · StG

StG 16/30/40, StG 64/90, StG 180 and StG 30.90 / 40.90

Geared rotary actuators built around a DC disc motor, with contactless position feedback, run by both analogue and digital Heinzmann controls. The PRIAMOS II manual describes the StG 64 and StG 90 as identical in design, the higher torque of the StG 90 coming from a different solenoid system, so only the plate tells them apart.

Positioner · STG EC

STG EC 40 and STG EC 250

Positioners that the maker lists for diesel, dual-fuel, ship and genset applications. They are enquired on their own designation, separately from any governor control unit.

Hydraulic governor · Regulateurs Europa

RE 1115-4G, RE 1800-3G, RE 1500-3G, RE 2100 and RE 1102-4G

Hydraulic governors from Regulateurs Europa, all carrying the maker's Ships marking. The RE 1115-4G is described for marine propulsion engines, with electronic speed setting and a low-build version where space is tight. The RE 1800-3G, RE 1500-3G and RE 2100 give mechanical speed control, the RE 2100 on high-speed engines, and the RE 1102-4G governs diesel or steam-turbine gensets.

Electro-hydraulic · Regulateurs Europa

RE 2800 actuator and DG 2800.14 II governor

The RE 2800 is a proportional fuel-control actuator with an internal oil pump and a self-contained oil supply, made for the Regulateurs Europa Viking range of digital governors and, through an interface module, for other makers' governors. In the DG 2800.14 II it is combined with the Heinzmann DC 14 digital governor, and for that combination the maker lists DNV GL and ABS marine certification.

Hydraulic actuator · Regulateurs Europa

RE 2222-3G, RE 2231-1GH and RE 2233-1G actuators; Viking35 control

Proportional hydraulic actuators. The RE 2222-3G and RE 2233-1G use a two-stage hydraulic servo, with a mechanical-hydraulic ballhead backup governor as an option; the RE 2231-1GH carries that ballhead backup against a power failure or a controller fault; the RE 2233-1G is aimed at large medium-speed engines. The Viking35 control that pairs with Regulateurs Europa hydraulic actuators is built for complex load sharing.

Engine protection · Common rail retrofit

TRITON OMD II; DARDANOS, ODYSSEUS HDP-K and ICR-DS

Two more Heinzmann lines in the same engine room. TRITON OMD II oil mist detection, a central unit with sensors, guards large engines such as ship engines against crankcase explosion. Medium-speed marine engines converted under Heinzmann's common rail retrofit carry DARDANOS EFI controls, ODYSSEUS HDP-K high-pressure pumps and ICR-DS injectors.

Wear pattern

Where a Heinzmann governor installation actually wears

Heinzmann's own service guideline for the StG 90 and StG 180 says actuator life and wear depend on ambient and operating conditions more than on running hours, and recommends an annual check. Wear shows up in four places.

Actuator internals

Gears, bearings and seals

At an overhaul of an StG 90 or StG 180, the guideline has all bearings, gear parts and seals replaced and the disc motors overhauled, after an inspection and a repair estimate for the owner to confirm.

Linkage

Ball ends, connections and brackets

The annual check disconnects the linkage, looks for worn ball ends and connections, and feels for friction and abnormal gear clearance by moving the actuator lever by hand. The PRIAMOS II manual warns that weak brackets or missing stiffeners intensify vibration and wear the actuator and its linkage prematurely.

Speed signal

Magnetic pickups

Engine speed is read by a pulse pickup from a gear wheel, preferably the starter gear, and a second pickup can be connected for redundancy. When one signal fails, the guideline traces the fault by cross-changing the connections between cabinet and sensors step by step. That is worth doing before a sensor goes on an enquiry.

Electrics

Plugs, feedback board and harness

Plugs and the actuator feedback board are replaced at overhaul when they are no longer in good condition. The PRIAMOS II manual advises taking the harness together with the governor and asks for each cable length segment by segment, so a damaged harness is a dimensioned item rather than loose cable.

Component groups

Heinzmann items that appear on RFQ lines

Nameplate reading

Plate data that makes a Heinzmann enquiry quotable

A Heinzmann governor has at least two plates, one on the control unit and one on the actuator, and the enquiry needs both. The items below let the line be read without a second round of questions.

  • Control-unit designation exactly as printed — DC 1-03, DC 1-04, DC 2-02, DC 6, XIOS UC or KG — plus the system name if the cabinet shows one, for example PRIAMOS II
  • Actuator designation from the actuator's own plate, including any suffix after the dash, for example StG 90 - 01
  • Serial numbers of the control unit and of the actuator, recorded separately
  • Supply voltage range as printed on the control-unit label
  • Speed pickup designation (IA ...), the gear wheel it reads and whether a second, redundant pickup is fitted
  • On hydraulic units: the Regulateurs Europa type as stamped (RE 2800, RE 1115-4G ...), the drive shaft option and the direction of rotation
  • Driven engine make and model and its duty — propulsion with or without CPP, several engines on one shaft, shaft generator, diesel-electric or genset
  • The governor's saved parameter set, as a hand-programmer or PC printout, if one exists
  • Photographs of the control-unit label, the actuator plate, the linkage and the cabinet wiring
What a Heinzmann enquiry is read against

Supply route review for Heinzmann governor installations

Each line is checked against the maker's own pairing rules and service practice before a reference is fixed.

Control unit and actuator read as a pair

Heinzmann publishes an allocation table of which StG actuator runs under which control unit. The StG 90 is listed under DC 1-03, DC 1-04 and XIOS, the StG 180 under DC 1-04 only. When a PRIAMOS control unit fails, the actuator question is answered from that table and the plates, not assumed.

Replaced is not the same as unobtainable

PRIAMOS has been replaced by XIOS UC, yet the maker still lists the DC 1-03 and DC 1-04 as a replacement device and spare part. An enquiry can be read both ways: like-for-like, or a move to the follow-up control. That choice stays with the shipowner and the engine builder.

The ship's own actuator comes back

Heinzmann's guideline for the StG 90 and StG 180 sends overhauls to a Heinzmann-approved workshop and returns the customer's own unit; actuators are not repaired on an exchange basis. An engine that cannot wait out an overhaul needs a second actuator, and the enquiry should say which it asks for: the overhaul, the spare unit or both.

Two group names, one governor

Hydraulic governors and actuators carry the Regulateurs Europa name, while the digital control on the same engine carries Heinzmann's. The DG 2800.14 II is both at once. Both plates go on the line, so the hydraulic body and the electronics are not quoted against each other's references.

Harness by length, not by the metre

The ordering section of the PRIAMOS II manual asks for each cable length segment by segment and advises taking the harness together with the governor. A harness enquiry carries those lengths, or a photograph of the existing harness with its cable markings.

OEM route or verified alternative

Control units, actuators and hydraulic bodies are read against the maker's designations. Pickups, potentiometers and plugs can be looked at on an OEM route or a verified alternative route where the plate evidence allows. Urgency, port and ETA stay on the line.

Short answers for technical buyers

Heinzmann governor enquiries — recurring questions

What information is needed to quote a Heinzmann governor or actuator?

The control-unit designation (for example DC 1-03, DC 2-02 or XIOS UC) and the actuator designation from its own plate (for example StG 90 or StG 180), each with its serial number. Add the driven engine make, model and duty, and photographs of both plates and the linkage; on hydraulic units, add the Regulateurs Europa type as stamped. Port and ETA help route the request.

What does PRIAMOS I, II or III on the cabinet tell a buyer?

Which actuator family the control unit was paired with. In Heinzmann's naming, PRIAMOS I is the DC 1-03 control unit with an StG 16/30/40 actuator, PRIAMOS II is the DC 1-03 with an StG 64/90, and PRIAMOS III is the DC 1-04 with an StG 180. The actuator plate still has to confirm it.

Is the PRIAMOS DC 1-03 still obtainable now that XIOS UC has replaced it?

The maker describes PRIAMOS DC 1-03 / DC 1-04 as replaced by its universal control XIOS UC but still available as a replacement device and spare part. Both routes can be reviewed against the plate evidence: a like-for-like control unit, or the follow-up control. Whether the existing actuator stays is read from the maker's allocation table and the plates.

Why does a Regulateurs Europa plate appear on a Heinzmann installation?

Regulateurs Europa develops and builds the hydraulic governors and actuators of the HEINZMANN Group, which it joined in 2005. An RE 2800 actuator can run from a Regulateurs Europa Viking control, or with a Heinzmann DC 14 digital governor in the combination the maker calls the DG 2800.14 II. Send both plates.

Can a Heinzmann StG actuator be overhauled rather than replaced?

Heinzmann's guideline for the StG 90 and StG 180 provides for overhaul by a Heinzmann-approved workshop: all bearings, gear parts and seals are replaced, the disc motors are overhauled, and the customer's own unit is returned, with no repairs on an exchange basis. A spare actuator, an overhaul and loose overhaul items can each be a separate RFQ line.

Is Vessel Core connected to Heinzmann?

No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Heinzmann, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.

A Heinzmann governor is ordered against two plates that often carry two names from the same group, so both names appear on this page. Vessel Core holds no distribution, representation or partnership agreement with this or any other manufacturer named on this page, and does not present itself as holding one. Heinzmann and Regulateurs Europa are trademarks of their owners, and PRIAMOS, HELENOS, PANDAROS, XIOS, DARDANOS, ODYSSEUS and TRITON are the maker's product names. The designations on this page appear so that a buyer can match equipment already installed; quoting a component against any of them implies no approval by the maker, and no compatibility or commercial relationship of any kind.

Governor fault, or planning the overhaul?

Send both plates — control unit and actuator.

Send the control-unit designation and serial number, the actuator designation and serial number, the driven engine and its duty, and the port or ETA. If the plates are hard to read, photographs of the cabinet label, the actuator and the linkage are enough to start. Each line is read back against the pairing before a reference is fixed.
