ABC engine series seen in engine-room enquiries

Anglo Belgian Corporation's diesel engines are read by a letter code after the cylinder count, and the code carries real technical meaning rather than being a model-name flourish. The DX line, the current in-line DZ range and its V-form DZC extension cover propulsion and generating duty from smaller cylinder counts up to sixteen, and the exact code — not the cylinder count alone — is what an overhaul request is actually built against.

DX series

DX · DXC

The DX line followed the earlier DU engines and was built three ways: DX naturally aspirated, DXS turbocharged, and DXC turbocharged with the charge air cooled after the compressor, with three, six or eight cylinders. Requests are written around cylinder heads, liners, piston assemblies, injection equipment and bearing shells, and the letter after DX belongs in the request because it separates three builds of the same engine.

DZ series · in-line

DZ · DZC

The in-line DZ engines, six or eight cylinders and written 6DZC or 8DZC in ABC's own engine lists, are still in Anglo Belgian Corporation's range for propulsion and generating duty, now also in methanol and hydrogen dual-fuel versions, alongside the larger DL36 and the Evolve engines introduced in 2021. Cylinder covers, valve spindles and seats, fuel injection pumps, injectors, connecting rod and main bearings are the usual lines; the cylinder count in front of the code identifies the engine, so send the plate as written.

DZ series · V-form

V-DZC · 12V · 16V

The V-form DZ engines, designed from 1997, extended the range to twelve and sixteen cylinders; ABC's own documents write the same engine as 12VDZC, 12DZC or 12VDZ, so copy the plate as stamped rather than tidying it. A V engine doubles the bank-dependent items, so state the bank and the cylinder position for heads, liners, rods and camshaft sections rather than the quantity alone.

Maker identity

Reading an ABC plate

The cylinder count sits in front of the letter code, and the code itself carries the real distinction — DX versus DXC, or the V-form suffix on a DZC. On a V engine, the cylinder count alone does not fix which bank a component belongs to; the bank and cylinder position have to travel with the request.

Where it goes wrong

Where an ABC engine enquiry actually gets stuck

Most enquiries that reach us on this equipment trace back to a code shortened by dropping the part that looks decorative rather than technical. DX, DXS and DXC are genuinely different builds — naturally aspirated, turbocharged, and turbocharged with charge-air cooling — sharing a base name, and dropping the trailing letter reads as the wrong build entirely. On the V-form DZC, the cylinder count (twelve or sixteen) names the engine but says nothing about which bank a head, liner or connecting rod sits on, so a request naming only the quantity leaves the actual position unresolved. Both are avoided the same way: copy the full code and, on a V engine, state the bank and cylinder position rather than the total count.

  • Cylinder heads & covers with valve gear
  • Cylinder liners & piston assemblies
  • Fuel injection pumps & injectors
  • Connecting-rod & main bearing shells
  • Camshaft sections & drive components
  • Turbocharger interface parts
  • Cylinder head gasket & seal sets
  • Complete overhaul kits by full code and bank

A V-form engine's bank-dependent parts are ordered against the bank and cylinder position, not the cylinder count alone — the code names the engine, the position names the part.

Evidence for the enquiry

Plate data that makes an ABC enquiry quotable

The designation plate is usually the fastest route to a correct match. With the items below an enquiry can be priced in one pass; without them it usually comes back with a clarifying question first. How a plate photograph becomes a priced list is set out on the how we work page.

  • Full type exactly as stamped, including the S or C after DX, any V on a twelve- or sixteen-cylinder engine, and any figure groups after a hyphen, which ABC's engine lists use for the rated speed
  • Cylinder count in front of the code
  • Bank and cylinder number as marked on the engine itself, for twelve- and sixteen-cylinder V engines
  • Application — main propulsion or genset drive — and fuel build: diesel or heavy fuel, or a methanol or hydrogen (BeHydro) dual-fuel DZ
  • Engine serial number from the plate, and a previous order line quoting it where one exists
  • Photograph of the designation plate and of the part being requested

Tools for this equipment: the Pt100 and thermocouple reader for the temperature sensors, the pressure gauge selector for the engine gauges and the O-ring size finder for loose O-rings. Where the engine burns residual fuel, the CCAI calculator works out the ignition quality of the bunker from its density and viscosity. If the deflections are being checked, the crankshaft deflection calculator reads the dial gauge figures across the crank webs and gives the deflection per crank, with a chart over the cylinders.

What an ABC enquiry gets read against

Supply route review for ABC engine equipment.

A trailing letter that separates naturally aspirated from charge-air cooled, and a V-form engine where the cylinder count alone does not name the bank a part sits on — the full code, and the bank where it applies, get settled before anything else.

Full letter code read before quoting

DX and DXC share a base name but are naturally aspirated and charge-air cooled builds respectively, so a request is read against the complete code rather than the base letters alone.

V-form bank and position confirmed

A twelve- or sixteen-cylinder DZC doubles the bank-dependent items over the in-line DZ, so heads, liners and connecting rods are quoted against the bank and cylinder position, not the cylinder count alone.

Current DZ range read from the full plate

The in-line DZ range is the current Anglo Belgian Corporation programme, and the cylinder count in front of the code is part of the identity rather than a separate specification.

Older DX/DXC engines still supported

The DX line that followed the earlier DU engines is still found on older tonnage, and its parts list is worked from that engine's own plate rather than assumed from the current DZ range.

Propulsion and genset scopes handled separately

A propulsion engine and a generating-duty engine on the same base code can call for different parts, so the application named in the enquiry decides which list a request is worked against.

Estonian company, registered in Tallinn

Vessel Core OÜ trades from Tallinn as an Estonian company, Reg. 17028043, VAT EE102773714. An engine component typically travels as hand-carry with a joining engineer; larger overhaul kits are crated. Supply route, handover option and documentation are confirmed in the quotation.

From the engine room

ABC engine parts — questions from the engine room

Which ABC engine series come up most often in spare-parts requests?

The DZ family leads: in-line 6DZC and 8DZC engines, with the V-form 12DZC and 16DZC designed from 1997. The earlier DX line in its DX, DXS and DXC builds, which followed the DU engines, is still found on older tonnage. ABC's current range also includes the larger DL36, the Evolve engines introduced in 2021, and methanol and hydrogen dual-fuel versions of the DZ. Send the full letter code and cylinder count exactly as stamped on the plate before a parts list is worked up.

Why does the letter after DX matter on an ABC engine?

ABC built the DX three ways: DX naturally aspirated, DXS turbocharged, and DXC turbocharged with charge-air cooling. They share a base name but not every part. Dropping the letter leaves an enquiry pointing at a family rather than the specific build, and the parts that differ between the builds are exactly the ones a request is usually about.

What is different about quoting a V-form ABC engine?

A V-form DZC engine doubles the bank-dependent items compared with the in-line DZ, so heads, liners, connecting rods and camshaft sections are quoted against the bank and cylinder position rather than the quantity alone. Naming twelve or sixteen cylinders is not enough on its own to fix which bank a component belongs to.

What should an ABC engine spare-parts RFQ contain?

A workable request lists the full letter code exactly as stamped, the cylinder count in front of the code, the bank and cylinder position for a V-form engine, and the application (propulsion or generating). A photograph of the plate and of the part being requested settles most of the remaining questions in one pass.

Is Vessel Core connected to Anglo Belgian Corporation?

No, and there is no agreement of any kind. Vessel Core holds no dealership, distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Anglo Belgian Corporation, and quoting a component against one of its designations implies no approval by the maker and no claim of interchangeability.

The engine codes on this page are short enough to be transcribed wrongly and specific enough to matter, which is the reason they are printed here in full. Vessel Core holds no dealership, distribution, representation or partnership agreement with Anglo Belgian Corporation or any other manufacturer named on this page, and does not present itself as holding one. ABC is a trademark of its owner. These designations appear so that a buyer can match equipment already installed; quoting a component against any of them implies no approval by the maker, and no compatibility or commercial relationship of any kind.

Engine down, or already stripped?

Send the designation plate — the parts list follows from it.

Send the full letter code exactly as stamped, including the cylinder count, and for a V-form engine the bank and cylinder position. Each line is then read back against the code and position it belongs to before a component reference is fixed against it.
